Debbie Harry, never one to hold her tongue, is lashing out against reality shows such as American Idol saying that the entire thing is a farce.
She says it gives the singers false hope that they will be given a successful career in the music industry.
She says,
“It’s not unique in any way. It’s grinding out more stuff, it’s not encouraging people to come on and play their own music. It’s just karaoke. And that to me is nothing. I can go down to any bar in the East Village practically any night of the week and see some asshole standing up there singing Stairway To Heaven.”

I like Debbie, really. But while I agree that some of the stuff from AI is drivel, can she really say that the stuff actually promoted to radio, the current award winning stuff like MY HUMPS is worthwhile, something profound? Sorry, can’t agree with her there, in the statement that it’s all rehash. That’s all there is on the radio right now….everything is a repeat of something else, the beats, the lyrical content, which in itself is an oxymoron, considering the wordage used…heh. Honestly, music that is unendingly played right now, for the most part, sucks. You have to work at it to find the really good, original, worthwhile, says something stuff. It fo’sure isn’t on TOP 40.
Don’t get me wrong, we need some mindless drivel, we need beats, we need the guilty pleasure. But it’d be nice to get some subtance as well.
And AI isn’t the procurer of all that is sucky in radio today.. That’s pretty much placed at the hands of make a buck quick labels and apathy.
I’ll shut up now…:-)
