PETA ‘Mother’s Day’ Pig Protest

PETA Stages a Mothers Day Demonstration at Covent Garden in London 2/28/08/ GETTY IMAGES

Ok, first of all, to clarify the Mother’s Day thing, it’s actually, ‘Mothering Sunday‘ this upcoming Sunday in the UK. So don’t start bombarding me with emails about how Mother’s Day is a couple months away.

I had to post this picture, because I have mixed feelings on PETA. I know a lot of you hate the organization because almost every time they are in the media and are mentioned on Celebrity Smack – I get emails. They are radical, and I think it is their downfall.

Most of you know I am, like, the hugest animal lover ever. I mean, I have to turn the channel every time that commercial with Sarah McLaughlin comes on..heh. It’s that bad. But I have a hard time supporting PETA because they always embarrass themselves with their extreme publicity stunts. On the flip side, if an animal benefits from it, then who cares if you embarrassed yourself, right?

Sometimes in this world you have to do something crazy to get noticed. But is their point getting across to anyone? You have to wonder.

For example, this photo. Are people going to walk away from this display remembering that pigs are being crammed into extraordinarily cramped spaces – or that they saw a chubby naked chick on all fours in public today? I’m going with the latter. This is why I tend to support local shelters/rescues instead of PETA.

I think that if they were less fanatical they would have a warmer reception from the public. It’s too bad really, because I think they could have a lot more support if they were a kinder, gentler organization.

Let me know your thoughts.

If I like a chubby naked chick on all fours, does that make ME a pig?

  • Melissa

OMG, Spicy! I giggled when I saw that you can’t watch the Sarah McLaughlin commercial because the first time I saw it I bawled for a good hour afterwards. I change the channel when it comes on because I can’t spend my day crying over a commercial.

  • http://celebritysmackblog.com Spicy Pants

The first time I saw it I cried too. I totally cannot watch it anymore – it just rips your heart out!

  • Calos

You ar right….thier point will never get ANYWHERE doing illegal things and pulling stunts like this. I mean seriously…If my kids had to see this I would have to clock someone in th head. I cant believe people support them whe things like this go on- Why dont they just have a pig in there….I would actually listen to what they had to say.. Are they trying to say pigs are just like humans? Come on…..Peta and similar groups like code pink have a lot to learn about scociety.

  • Emily

i don’t support peta. i love animals, but i’m also not a vegatarian.

but peta are evil. they murder animals. and i’m sorry, but humans do come before animals. animals shouldn’t be abused or neglected… but we are the top of the food chain.

  • Joanna

I totally agree with you on how they get the point across. I would think more about the woman in the cage and how silly she looked rather than the cramped pens the pigs are in.

I am an animal lover , but I won’t turn down some bacon. We have sharp teeth for a reason. Do these people realize that? You don’t see any sharks protesting about other sharks eating seals or fish.

  • http://celebritysmackblog.com Spicy Pants

    I love me some steak too…and sausage…etc…

I think the government needs stricter guidelines when it comes to how animals are raised before being slaughtered for consumption though. The hormones and shit – the unsanitary and cramped places they are kept, it’s scary we eat that shit sometimes.

  • Midge

    C’Mon Spicy, PETA kills animals!

    http://www.petakillsanimals.com/

  • http://lovelylust.blogspot.com/ Jenny

    time to go veggie guys…

  • Alyssa

i cant stand peta. they are wayy too pushy and annoying…

  • Kaeley

I am a vegetarian, and I think it is a personal choice, not to be bashed by other people’s opinions. Stating that don’t vegitarians realize we have sharp teeth for a reason? Um yes, I am pretty sure we understand that. And also, ‘you don’t see sharks eating fish.’ I am not sure if you are aware of this, but sharks are animals, and cannot speak, nor form a right of opinion regarding diet.

I am also a member of PETA, but I do agree with the fact that they can be extremely radical and overwhelming. But when you look at it from a marketing point of view, they do always get people talking about PETA and animal rights.

    C’Mon Spicy, PETA kills animals!

Wow. I had heard of this website but only now just visited it. I’m shocked!

  • mandylou

    she’s pregnant, actually.

and i think the peta’s of the world are necessary when you consider the behemoth industries they are up against. i’m a vegetarian and a huge supporter of peta — and while their message is simple, people are absolutely ignorant when it comes to animal rights. everything from floss to shoes to sweeteners — and much more, it’s all tested on animals. as an animal lover, i wonder why people spend more energy being bristled by their message than being sincerely moved, and make changes accordingly. these days, it’s so easy to be animal friendly.

  • JustMe

I love animals. I eat meat. I hate peta. And the world continues to turn…

  • bustoff

PETA, I have a suggestion. You eat whatever you want, and I’ll eat whatever I want. Agree to disagree. But spare me your righteous indignation because I don’t share your dietary opinions. Animals were put on earth by God to serve man — not the other way around. Do you think the millions of people in the world who go to bed hungry every night give a damn about your vegan manifesto? You know. The kind of people who would kill for a Whopper. This is America. Chill the fuck out.

  • Sabrina

pretty sure bustoff put it exactly how i would have if i could think clearly at the moment

  • JB

Spicy, watch Penn & Teller’s Bullshit episode on P.E.T.A., tell us what you think.

  • http://celebritysmackblog.com Spicy Pants

I’ll just say this. JB, I watched the video, wow. I think a lot of members of PETA must not know about all of this, the euthanizations and such….because, well, it completely contradicts what they ‘claim’ they stand for.

It’s funny, the more I learn about PETA, the more I feel like it’s a sort of ‘cult’.

Think about it, the similarities are there.

As for vegetarians, good for you. I would never judge anyone one way or the other. I have nothing against vegetarians, the point here is extremist animal rights activists who are not doing anything to actually pro-actively help animals in dire need.

Instead of protesting and throwing blood and preaching at everyone else to not eat meat, they should be volunteering their time to local shelters and animal rescues.

Put your money where your mouth is, bitches.

  • visonage

Does anyone realize how blatantly sexiest this is? Not that I think men should be put in the cage instead. But peta does tend to sexualize their movement. I don’t think exploited women is a good way to save animals.

  • Michelle

I am a Vegetarian. I became Vegetarian because I have problems eating a once living Creature. A Creature that deserves to roam this planet and enjoy it as much as we do. Just because animals can’t talk and voice their opinions It dosen’t mean we have the right to do it for them. The thing that bothers me the most is seeing animals Suffer. Animals that die for FUR is plain wrong. I don’t shove my opinions don’t people’s throats but at the same time i feel like someone needs to give animals a voice. PETA does that and that’s why I am a proud member.

  • Chryssi

PETA is just an example of how things that once used to be considered good (i.e., God created animals to serve people, yes, where do we get wool? meat? etc., and also is PETA has such a fucking problem with FUR then why the FUCK do they not protest at football games and everywhere else equipment and wear is made from leather and other animal products?!?!?)
I think they are idiotic, and if perhaps they didn’t act like such imbeciles and lunatics perhaps more people would take them seriously…
hehehe….I think most people laugh at them rather than pay attention to any message they try to convey…
Oh, and if anyone were to EVER throw paint or any other such materials on a fur coat if I were wearing it, their face would be shattered into so many pieces by my fist that they would forget how they used to look….

  • Alitax

Calos, if you kids see someone get naked on MTV, are you going to go beat down a producer?

If the point is that pigs deserve more space, then it doesn’t seem to prove the point to stick a pig in a small space. I don’t see why this is hard to understand, or why you won’t “listen to what they have to say” because their methods are off the wall. That says far more about you than them.

  • http://www.veganoutreach.org/whyvegan/animals.html VeganB*tch

I used to be vegetarian and volunteered with PETA several times to campaign for better living conditions for farm animals until I figured out how hypocritical I was. I am a RIGHTS activist, not welfare. I don’t believe in bigger cages or less hormones, I believe in and work toward empty cages and outright animal liberation.

Those of you who claim to love animals simply love the TASTE of animals. You’re lying to yourselves. You love the fact that you can pay someone else to raise and slaughter living beings while your hands stay clean. Are any of you biology grads? For godssakes, you all sound like morons.

You have eye teeth, two sharply pointed teeth in your head and no, your teeth nor your stomach were not meant to kill, chew, and digest raw meat (as sharks, lions, etc. do) without the risk of getting ill. Think “mad cow” disease, bird flu, etc. and remember these occurrences are not a part of the natural life cycle, but the result of forcing herbivores to eat animal proteins and of highly confined and filthy living conditions. Think further to the unprecedented dietary disorders affecting hundreds of millions of westerners, such as heart disease, colon cancer, diabetes, mood disorders, acne, asthma, etc. that weren’t found on our continent even 75 years ago – with the exception of the very wealthy. What’s our secret? Animal proteins. And guess who rakes in the dough when you need relief from your own flesh gorging? Pharmaceutical companies.

Anyway, this PETA image is fucked up to the core. It in no way describes the life-cycle of pigs genetically manipulated and bred for human consumption, nor does it describe the number of pigs killed per year (91.8 million in 2000 and we can deduce the numbers have risen) or literature detailing meat analogues (“mock” meat products) that you can replace your cheap dead pig flesh with. PETA has so much influence yet has so little positive impact.

Oh man, kinda funnny if you look into some of the stuff PEta has done, i joined when i was 13 and shot my first deer when i was 14. It didnt get stuck in a cage and we ate the meat and that is Free Range. Needless to say I am no longer a member!! Peta Has gotten out of hand, One good Idea and BAM power overload.
Do they still mail nickles in the mail? I wonder how much money they wasted doing that!

  • laurella

ugh, i am an animal lover and i have NEVER agreed with peta. for one, destroying other people’s property is not okay. especially if all it does if make the person go buy another of whatever it is. i can go either way about eating meat, sometimes i love it and sometimes i cant stand eating something that was alive, but being a vegan is not healthy. a good friend of mine in high school went vegan, and she got super skinny and stopped getting her period. did you know that you have to eat at least 1800 A DAY calories just of beans and rice or some other complete protein to get the protein you need if you are a vegan? you have to plan out every last bite you put in your mouth. if you do not get enough protein, your body will start breaking down the less important parts of your body to make up for it. this is why many vegans who look thin are actually obese, because they have no muscle left, and obsity is body fat percentage, not weight. and don’t even get me started on the fur thing. While I dont think every woman should own like 15 fur coats, the only alternative in warm clothing from animal products (fur, leather, shearling, down etc) is fleece or another petroleum product. if peta (or anyone else) can suggest something as warm as these that is sustainable (fleece is NOT) i would be happy to listen, but otherwise we will continue to use animal products to keep warm. and, like i told my vegan friend in high school, it is easier to get people to buy free range organic eggs than getting them to stop buying eggs altogether! understand that people eat and wear animals, then try to get people to treat them better, not do crazy publicity stunts that barely mean anything and will change no ones mind!

I am a huge animal lover, as well, and I DO NOT love PETA. They are bad. Did you all know that they killed 97% of the animals they took into their “shelter” in 1996. Did you know two of the PETA staff in Norfolk, VA were indicted for going around to area shelters and vets office picking up animals under the pretense that they were going to take them back to the shelter and find homes for them. Instead, what they did was kill the animals as soon as they got them into the van. They then dumped them–in black plastic garbage bags–in the dumpsters of area businesses. This is how they got caught. PETA does not believe that we should have domesticated animals at all. They deride the No-Kill movement, and they sanction the immediate killing of pitbulls upon arrival at any shelter, regardless of temperament or good health. Obviously, they also support Breed Specific Legislation for pitbulls.

I network with someone who is a member and rah-rah supporter of PETA. She is of the mind that just because PETA has done this one bad thing, they should still be supported because of all the good things they have done for animals in general. My feeling is that that is like saying, Well, the Nazis did a really bad thing, but just look how many medical advances came out of the torturing of thousands of people for experimentational reasons. Just can’t seem to get behind PETA. So there ya go!

  • AndreaG

It was 2006. Sorry, my bad

  • Lynn

I was making cookies when that commerical came on and I was besides myself .. I was in tears and basically told my husband we needed to get to the shelter to get an animal and he was like, umm no… but again the other night I was watching something and that commercial came on – I have to change the channel now, I get so emotional.

Peta – great cause but I just think they are extreme .. but like you say they get the job done!

  • Alitax

We need fur to keep warm?

wtf is this, the stone age?

I’ve heard terrible arguments about eating animals, but nobody has ever bothered trying to justify a human’s right to wear fur quite like THAT before.

The only reason to wear fur is selfishness. Pure and simple. Also consider that “fur” from China may be from a cat or dog, so if you wouldn’t give your own pet over to be electrocuted in the anus and skinned–possible alive?–then it’s a no-brainer: don’t effin wear fur.

    Guh.

  • Michelle

GOOD POINT Alitax! EXACTLY! If you need to keep warm then stay inside Biatch…you dont need fur to stay warm. And Chryssi you sound like an idiot. I WOULD be one of those people throwing paint on your ass if i saw you in a fur coat. You must be a selfish person to not give a shit about innocent animals dying so you can keep warm….Like Alitax said…this isnt the Stone ages.. If people only knew what really goes on in the Fur Industry and actually had a heart they would reconsider wearing it.

  • Nechyfer

I ALSO AGREE WITH YOU AND WITH MICHELLE. P_____A SEXUALIZES MOST OF THEIR ADDS WHICH REALLY SUCKS AND NOT ONLY CAN I NOT WATCH SARA MCLACHLAN BUT THERE’S ALSO ONE COMMERCIAL WITH MICHAEL STIPE -REM FOR THE SAME ORG. MUST FAST FORWARD BOTH!
WHEN I FIRST SAW THIS PHOTO I CAUGHT IT WAS SIDEWAYS VIEW WITH A LITTLE KID LOOKING AT THIS WOMAN now get this WHO IS 8 MONTHS PREGNANT. POINT BEING ABOUT THE SPACE AND THE MOTHER AND LITTLE ONES IN THERE. IT EAS SHOCKING AT FIRST GLANE.

    LOVE LOVE LOVE YOUR SITE!!!!

  • Chryssi

Michelle, I am not an idiot I am also a boxer, and if you ruined a fur of mine, not only would you be knocked the fuck out you would be sued for damages.
    That is ridiclous
Everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion but not entitled to force their opinions upon others.
And, while it is not the stone ages, people who live in cities like New York, where we walk everywhere, in the cold, yes, we do need adequate protection from the cold, and cotton just doesn’t fucking cut it…
I love animals, nothing anyone else could say to change how I feel, but I think it is trashy and completely IDIOTIC when imbeciles attempt to force their opinions on others, whatever the subject matter is.

  • Pingback: Say What?!

You are a boxer…now im fucking shaking in my boots bitch. I would still knock your head off, believe me. Oh you poor fucking thing….you live in New York so you HAVE To wear fur….cry me a river bitch. I live in Germany..so I KNOW what cold means…do I wear fur?? NO. I run outside every other day and i still don’t need fur. We walk and bike all over around here as well and still NO FUR on my back. Looks like I can handle the cold just fine without slaughtering an innocent animal. Because of your pansy ass an innocent animal suffers…WAY TO GO! How can you love animals? You are wearing one on your back…Thats lke someone saying…Yeah I love my child but i abuse them every day….dosent make sense..does it? Get a grip on reality. You should be so proud. I will shove my opinion down someone elses throat when It has to do with an innocent animal who has NO say in the matter.
