He’s geeky-chic, and he’s bringing college humor back.
You probably already know that Seth Rogen, star of 40-Year-Old Virgin and Knocked Up, is a high-school dropout, and you most certainly know he as a taste for the sticky-icky. But what else do you know about this 26-year-old Canadian? Probably not much.
Digital Spy does some digging and fill us in.
1. Seth’s mom Sandy, a social worker, and dad Mark, who is employed by non-profit organizations, met on a kibbutz in Israel. Seth says of his folks, “They’re radical Jewish socialists. Where I come from, communism is not a terrible word.”
2. Seth performed his first stand-up gig at a Vancouver lesbian bar at the age of 13. For the next four years, he was a regular on the local comedy club circuit, cracking jokes about such child-friendly subjects as bar mitzvahs and his grandparents. He told hecklers, “I’m 13. In 30 years, I’ll be 43. You’ll be dead.”
3. Seth met longtime writing partner Evan Goldberg at high school, where Evan knew him as “the loud dude” because of his booming voice. The pair started writing Superbad when they were just 13 years old.
4. Seth landed a part in Judd Apatow’s short-lived but acclaimed TV show Freaks And Geeks at the age of 16, after which he left school and moved to LA. Apatow says of the casting, “I thought, ‘Well, there’s a type of guy you never see on TV’. Back then his voice was really froggy and deep, with a thick Canadian accent, and he was so young and so angry, we thought, ‘He’s gotta be on the show’.”
5. Seth was part of the Emmy-winning writing team for the second season of Da Ali G Show in the US. “I think he’s the funniest man alive,” he gushes of Sacha Baron Cohen. “I can’t reiterate that enough. I really think he’s invented a new kind of comedy that no-one else will ever be able to do.”
6. Seth had minor roles in Dawson’s Creek, which he claims never to have watched, and cult movie Donnie Darko, which he claims not to understand.
7. Seth reckons his movies appeal primarily to “20-year-old dudes”. “It seems I only relate to nerds in high school who can’t get laid,” he says. “I don’t even have a stalker. I’m just not the guy that people stalk.”
8. Seth was so intimidated when he found himself standing near Sir Paul McCartney at a fundraiser that he couldn’t stop thinking about kicking him in the crotch. He says, “There was a point where he was three feet away from me and all I kept thinking was, ‘If I run up and kick him in the crotch right now, I’ll be the most famous man alive’.” Fortunately he managed to resist the temptation.
9. Seth lives in an LA mansion with comedy writer Lauren Miller, his girlfriend of three years.
10. What would Seth do if he wasn’t in the movie biz? “Oh, man, I don’t think I could do anything else,” he says. “I’d probably be a crackhead, maybe a drug dealer or seller of bootleg movies – something like that. Something easy and illegal.”
