Twilight opened Friday, taking in an astonishing $70.6 million in it’s first weekend. Unheard of for a female director.
In fact, it is the highest grossing film ever for a female director.
The film is based on the best selling series by Stephanie Meyer. The four books have sold over 17 million copies.
Summit studios picked up the screenplay after MTV Films and Fox Atomic passed on it.
The film was made for $37 million and producers kept costs down by hiring an unknown cast and by keeping special effects to a minimum.
A sequel, ‘New Moon’ is in the works.
