Miley Cyrus is in the center of yet another photo controversy.
This time, Miley and pals pose for a picture with an Asian friend as they all slant their eyes. So now an Asian civil rights group is up in arms over the photo, calling it offensive.
The OCA released the following statement,
“The photograph of Miley Cyrus and other individuals slanting their eyes currently circulating the Internet is offensive to the Asian Pacific American community and sets a terrible example for her many young fans. This image falls within a long and unfortunate history of people mocking and denigrating individuals of Asian descent.
Not only has Miley Cyrus and the other individuals in the photograph encouraged and legitimized the taunting and mocking of people of Asian descent, she has also insulted her many Asian Pacific American fans, said George Wu, executive director of OCA. The inclusion of an Asian Pacific American individual in the photo does not make it acceptable.
OCA hopes that Miley Cyrus will apologize to her fans and the APA community for this lapse in judgment and takes the opportunity to better understand why the gesture is offensive.”
It’s so weird to think that when I was a kid we used to sing “One little, two little, three little Indians..” and stuff like, “Chinese, Japanese, dirty knees, look at these!” That sh*t just doesn’t happen anymore.
All this reminds me of Eddie Murphy on Delirious (back when he was actually funny) when he did a skit of a white guy making fun of Asians and how they talk while ordering from a Chinese restaurant.
In turn, he then plays the Asian who overhears whitey making fun of his accent and so he imitates whitey by prying his eyes wide open and saying, “I’ll have a cheeseburger, large fry,” with sharp ‘caucasian’ pronunciation.
Sometimes we just need to laugh at each other, yeah?
Chime in: Do you think the pic is offensive – or do you think people just need to lighten up?

Not offensive at all; anyone who is upset by this is just looking for a reason to get their panties in a bunch. There’s even an Asian there, clearly that makes it okay.
If the Asian dude isn’t offended, why should anyone else be? I’ve always said I’d rather be rich than famous, because when you’re famous, you have to walk on eggshells for every spineless little twerp(or group of them) that gets so easily offended. Too much else in this world to worry about. BTW, in case anyone has lived under a rock for their whole life, ‘turning Japanese’ is another term for whacking off. Hope I didn’t offend anyone. Heh.
i can’t believe they think it’s offensive to be honest.
I thought turning Japanese meant to get baked!
I think the argument that “oh there’s an Asian guy in the pic so it must be ok” is ridiculous. With that rational then slavery mist have been ok cause other african tribes were selling africans to white europeans.
From personal experience, it is not funny or fun when you’re an Asian kid and people going ching chong ching to you. And my main problem with the pic is that miley cyrus is going around saying in interviews how she wants to be a good role model to kids. Is that what a good role model to kids does?
Good God people!…this pic is not offensive at all!!!
They actually look like idiots. I hope the kids who idolize Miley do not go out acting like this. Unlike hers, other Asian FRIENDS might actually take offense and nail them after school, beating them till their faces freeze like that.
I don’t find it offensive at all, and I find it hard to believe that those who do find it offensive have never took a jab at other races…… people need to lighten up.
wtf? she’s with an asian friend that isn’t bothered so why should anyone else be? it’s not offensive in any way because it’s clearly not meant to be spiteful, it’s just cause she’s famous that people like to make a big deal out of it! She’s not the only person in the world who’s done it so just leave her be.
[...] Miley Cyrus snaps into a new “racist” scandal. (CS) [...]
Unless you are of that ethnic group, what right do you have to tell an ethnic group whether they should “lighten up” about what they think is offensive to them or not.
So should african-americans have “lightened up” when ted danson wore black face to a roast of whoopi goldberg?
i find it disturbing not that whether people find it offensive or not but that people can’t be empathetic to why asians might.
This is the left at it again…some folks look for an EXCUSE to be ‘offended’.
Apparently the guy in the pic doesnt have a problem and none of these whiney assed bozos would have lasted a minute in the military.
What also fails to get mentioned is the wealth of ‘white’ material comics use these days. If you arent white and youre a comedian (or celebrity) it is apparently well within your right to publicly mock white people. Unfortunately the reverse isnt true. We have become the land of the ACLU where everyone is protected EXCEPT white middle class Christians. This is just syptomatic.
Turning Japanese, the song by The Vapors, is supposedly about the face guys make when they’re masturbating. True story.
When I was in high school I had a Korean friend that taught me the alphabet and several phrases including “I am Korean.”
She and every other Korean exchange student I ever met found it very amusing if I ever pulled my eyes back and said this. They would even ask me to do it for someone else. It was never mean spirited, just amusing.
Obviously, this photo is not meant to be insulting. They’re just some kids having fun. People should really look at context before they get all huffy about it.
