Jeremy Lusk, 24, a freestyle motocross rider, died Tuesday after a terrible crash that left him in critical condition for three days.

Lusk, who won a  Gold Medal at the 2008 X Games, was attempting a ‘Hart Attack ‘ backflip when the landing went awry. He failed to complete the rotation and instead landed on his face with a tremendous impact. Doctors later said he  suffered severe brain damage and spinal cord injuries.

Lusk had a similar incident happen at the 2007 X Games but was not injured from that incident.

Chris Stiepock the VP and GM of the X Games hailed Lusk as “one of the world’s best freestyle moto riders…He was a tremendous athlete and competitor and represented the sport of freestyle motocross very well,.”

Lusk died with his parents and his wife, Lauren, at his side.

Jorge Ramirez, chief of the intensive care unit at Calderon Hospital, described his situation, “He was in a medicine-induced coma as a protective measure, and the medicine was being reduced to see how his body responded,” he said. “That didn’t mean he was going to wake up. He was in shock and that got worse last night, until he stopped responding and entered into cardiac and respiratory failure.”

A trust has been set up in memory of  Jeremy.  http://www.athleterecoveryfund.com.

The following is the crash video from that night. It is very disturbing, so be forewarned. I’d advise you not watch it if you know it is going to bother you.
