Beverly Eckert lost her husband in the 9/11 World Trade Center terrorist attacks and the tragedy inspired her to become a spokesperson for Voices of Sept. 11.
She was a strong woman who was on her way to Buffalo to launch a scholarship fund in honor of her late husband, Sean Rooney.
In a terrible twist of fate, Beverly died in yesterday’s crash of the Dash 8 Q400 Bombardier aircraft, operated by Continental Express.
The 74-seat plane was flying from Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey when it reportedly nosedived straight down out of the sky and crashed into a residential home, causing a massive fireball. The jet apparently came down so fast that the pilot had no time to call for help.
49 people, including Eckert, were on the commuter plane.
Miraculously, two residents of the home the plane crashed into survived the fiery accident. Karen Wielinski, 57, and her daughter, Jill, 22.
Jill was upstairs in the home when the plane crashed into it, causing the roof to collapse on her. Karen was outside the home and watched the plane come straight at her. Both women are currently at Millard Hospital.
The whereabouts of husband & father, Douglas Wielinski, 61, is unknown.
Brendan Biddlecom, a neighbor who lives a few blocks from the Wielinski’s told Good Morning America that the crash occured just after he put his children to bed, around 10:20 p.m.
“I heard what sounded like a low buzzing sound, like a chain saw. I knew it was a plane, and I thought, gosh that almost sounds like a plane going down,” Biddlecom said.
“Immediately there was an explosion and the house kind of shook,” he said. “It was a terrifying sound. A few moments later there was an additional explosion and the sky just lit up.”
President Obama gave his condolences, saying “our hearts go out to the families and friends who lost loved ones.”
