Brad Pitt is pulling no punches when comparing his new film, Inglourious Basterds, to that of Tom Cruise’s, Valkyrie.
There is no comparison, he says. “It was a ridiculous movie,” he says of Valkyrie.
Pitt gave an interview with German magazine, Stern, and in it he says that Quentin Tarantino made the World War II film to end all Hilter assassination war flicks.
“The second World War could still deliver more stories and films, but I believe that Quentin put a cover on that pot. With Basterds, everything than can be said to this genre has been said. The film destroys every symbol. The work is done, end of story.”
Quite a powerful statement. It reminds me of this 1899 quote from Charles H. Duell, commissioner of the U.S. Patent Office:
“Everything that can be invented has been invented.”
Heh.
So while I love the fact that Pitt is that confident about his new film, and I am pleasantly surprised at his jab at colleague, I still think it’s a bit bold. I’ll just have to reserve total judgment until I see it for myself.
(Pssstt… generally, I do love Tarantino films, and I don’t doubt Pitt’s claims at all!)

Valkyrie was really an awful awful movie. The accents were the worst part. Cruise played a german officer with an american accent! I mean..like hes sooo Hollywood that he doesnt have to portray the actual accent? The guy playing Hitler had an english accent! Seriously? The rest of the movie was a joke too. I dont blame Pitt one bit for saying what he said. He’s spot on.
I think it’s cool of him to have the balls to say that. I’m sure his movie rocks. He’s definitely not boring in interviews.
Brad Pitt is a moron. He ripped ‘Valkryie’, comparing a true story about the plot that almost killed Hitler to Tarantino’s comic book action piece. Did anyone tell Pitt that Valkryie really happend?
More obnoxious and the point that the article seems to miss, however, is the fact that Pitt actually thinks ‘Basterds’ puts a wrap on WW2 films forever. WW2 was the largest conflict in history. There are millions of stories to be told there.
As scottsgirl… you didn’t like ‘Valkryie’ because of the accents? Seriously? I’m willing to bet that the Nazis didn’t speak english with a german accent, why would you expect the actors to do the same? If you see a movie about the romans, do you want the actors to speak with a ‘roman’ accent? What the hell is that?
