Man slaps crying child in Georgia Walmart

A man, Roger Stephens, 61, had enough of a crying child while shopping in a Walmart store.

So much so that he approached the child’s mother, Sonya Mathews, and told her that if she did not quiet her child he would do it for her. The child continued crying so Stephens made good on his word. He went up to the child, a 2-year-old baby named Paige, and slapped her multiple times in the face, shocking everyone who witnessed it. He then told Mathews: “See, I told you I would shut her up.”

Little Paige suffered redness to her cheeks but was not seriously hurt.

Since the incident Mathews has said that she forgives Stephens, saying he must have mental issues.

Stephens has been charged with cruelty with children in the first degree, a felony. He is being held without bond.

Well, check out Mr. Grumpasaurus’ mugshot! He looks like he’s ready to kick the police officer’s ass who photographed him! Still, I would have tangled it up with this mofo. Pop that grandpa once in that big schlong of a nose and I promise you that lanky old bastard would drop like a rotten sack of bones.

On the otherhand, I hate screaming kids too. Heh. Just being honest. Not that they deserved to be smacked in the face, mind you, but honest to gawd, people do not know how to control their children in public anymore. Just the truth. I went to my local library the other day and could barely stand being there for more than 5 minutes. Kids were literally running and screaming up and down the aisles. One kid was banging hard and loudly on a keyboard of a computer – over and over. The parents didn’t seem to mind, they were fully engulfed in whatever book it was they were digging their nose into. The staff seemed oblivious as well, like it was just another day on the job.

I agree that Mr. Stephens most likely has mental “issues”. I have a hunch that this kid may have been the one that broke the camel’s back and he flipped out. I mean, he WAS at Walmart, and we all know how well behaved people’s children are there.

Heh.

if they ever remake the movie grumpy old men they need to cast this guy.

  • ZZ

He deserves a medal…and a parade. Should have slapped the mother, too!

  • A WILLIAMS

HE PICKED A MOTHER WITH NO HUSBAND AROUND, HE IS THE WORST TYPE OF COWARDLY MAN, I WISH I WOULD HAVE SEEN HIM DO THIS, I AM PRETTY SURE I WOULD HAVE KICKED THE HELL OUT OF HIM

While I agree, there are lots of parents not in control of their kids, I don’t think this particular situation was one of those times. The little girl is two, still a baby. The report said she was crying….not having a tantrum. There’s a good chance she had a reason to cry. Perhaps she hurt herself. The report also says, that when the man came back, he grabbed her from the mom and smacked her 4-5 times on the face (by the way, had he smacked her temple hard enough, he could have killed her). So, if he was able to grab her, there’s no way she was sitting in the buggy (you CANNOT get a child quickly out of the seat of a shopping cart, I dare you to try, the darn shoes get stuck everytime). So I am guessing, if the man grabbed her from the mom, the mom was probably holding her….and probably doing her best to console and calm her down. I don’t think this was a case of child running amuk and misbehaving. Babies cry. She was just crying. Babies don’t have “off” switches…..KWIM?

So hitting a crying child makes them stop crying? Especially if it’s a stranger slapping the child, who knew that would work? Usually when you slap a kid they cry. Is this man the future of child management?

No to all of the above! He assaulted a 2 year old child and if the kid’s mom doesn’t have the class to remove the crying kid – most normal people remove themselves. People need to start getting sitters when the kids are to young, or to tired to go out. Do it later or do it another day for everyone’s sake.

I’ve only been in a wal mart once in my life, but I saw about 10 child assaults in that store the day I went. All I can deduce is that if you shop at wal mart you beat your kids too.

I have a 2 year old daughter and not only does she act like she has sense when we’re out and about, I also do not let her out of my sight nor does she get the opportunity to run hog wild around any establishment. When my daughter gets overtired or cranky if necessary I will cut my trip short to keep from causing myself, her, and other further aggravation; if necessary, however the majority of the time we have a little one on one conversation with me looking her directly in the eyes and asking why she’s acting out, how she’s feeling, etc and me telling her that I understand and if she’d cooperate we’d be done in a minute and can go home or where ever else we need to go usually works.

Anyway, got off subject, while I by no means agree with what that man did and would probably have stomped his a** 6 ways from Sunday, I can say I relate to what he must have been feeling and the aggravation. Nothing is worse than watching people who seem to be totally oblivious to their ill mannered little heathens; I’m talking running into you, knocking stuff down, screaming, crying, and all the while mommy is in her own world. My thing though is it doesn’t make me want to slap the child to get them to quiet down, it makes me want to knock the sh*t out of the supposed parent(s). These are the formative years people and if you haven’t taught your child(ren) right from wrong, manners, etc by now then you are the real reason to blame when later down the line they become murders, criminals, drop outs, gang bangers, drug dealers, and the like; hell what do you expect when you don’t teach them any better? And no offense but as I said if you miss the formative years good luck, because by the time they have past it’s hard trying to get someone to listen to you when they never did before, to show respect when they don’t even know what it is, not to mention the older they get the bigger they get and you raise them not to care not to respect then watch out because when they get sick of listening to you or you make the mistake of thinking you can hit them or punish them in some way and you get to learn the hard way how it feels to be handled physically by your own child!!

Just remember that while it may be true that you cannot be fully blamed for the actions of others, that people learn by example, rules are made for a reason, and you can’t expect everyone to raise your child for you especially if you’re the type who if someone does try to discipline them you want to show your ignorance and try to start a confrontation with them.

Sorry for the long post I guess I just wanted to remind everyone of why America and the world in general is going to Hell in a Handbasket…..people forgot how to be role models and parents!!

Oh and for those so quick to jump to the defense of the mother and to make excuses for the child’s behavior….just further supports why society is as screwed as it is now. I mentioned that I myself have a 2 year old, and she knows how to act in public, she knows when mommy says
behave or mommy says her first and middle name it’s time to calm down…come on people it’s not rocket science and 2 year old are not as dumb as you’d like to pretend!! But as I said it’s not at this age the child’s fault the blame can pretty much be placed on the parents and other role models that are around the child, because at 2 children are still more like parrots they imitate what they see. So all these little banshees and heathens that seriously make me think twice about some people getting sterilized just need look at themselves for a place to place the blame, you taught your child this, you are passing this on for them to pass on, and trying to reason or lie to yourself about them only being 2, them crying because that’s what they do, there’s nothing you can do about it is just a bunch of bull to make yourself feel better!
-Remember children even as young as 2 are not idiots they know how to behave they know right from wrong if they’ve actually been around it. -Yes, babies, toddlers, and small children will and are going to cry at some point when your in the store, that’s a given, but why should the rest of us have to put up with it???

Oh and why should the people disturbed by the ruckus be the ones who should leave, isn’t that a little backwards? When there is a disturbance of the peace, the cops come and usually haul off the person causing the disturbance or at least get them to stop with it, so how is it any difference in this case? Shouldn’t the parent(s) with the crying, screaming, etc child(ren) be the one that should leave? Oh and please don’t give me that bull about the only time you have to go to the store or something else similar because I’m a divorced, working mother that can barely afford day care during the week so I couldn’t even imagine using a daycare just so I can do peaceful shopping, so I do what I can when I can.

And before too many of you leave in a huff, chew on this; while it was hypocritical for posters to say that others should leave versus the source of the problem, I don’t only say that because in all actuality it is the decent fair thing, but because if a guy has already went up and slapped a 2 year old what do you think some other lunatic might do, hell they do a lot more for less severe things these days!!?

    Just a thought.

  • Alfred

I would have done the same. Better correct your kids now, when their bigger faux-pas is screaming in a supermarket and not when they are already criminals. If the lady couldn’t handle the situation, good for you, Mr. Stephens, for helping the poor stupid. And you forgot to slap her too, she deserves it more than the kid!!!

  • patrick

IF I WAS ONE OF THOSE WITNESSES I WOULD HAVE WALKED UP TO THE GUY AND LITERALLY FUCK UP THAT BASTARD AND THEN SLAP THE SHIT OUT OF THE MOTHER FOR ALLOWING TO HAPPEN THEN TAKE THE KID TO CHILD SERVICES…BUT AFTER I BEAT THE SHIT OUT OF THE GUY…OH AND ALFRED YOUR A DUMB ASS FOR THINKING THAT THAT THE LIL GIRL DESERVES IT..TAKE IT YOU DONT HAVE KIDS AND YOU’RE ONE OF THOSE COMPUTER LOW LIFES WHO STAY HOME AND MASTERBATES..

  • Amy

the thing is guys, nowhere in the official AP press release does it say that this little gir was running wild and acting horrible. The report simply says she began to cry. It seems that we can just as easily make the assumption that she began to cry for a legitimate reason, as we can assume that she was a horrible child not being tended to by her mom. Seriously. Read the actual words. You can’t project your own opinion of how kids can or can’t act in public onto this scenario…..because there simply is information in this report that says anything more about this child’s behavior than that the girl was crying, a man walked up, grabbed her from the mom, and slapped her.

HOWEVER, whatever the reason for her crying, that man committed a felony assault…..plain and simple. If he had walked up to an adult and hauled off and punched them for no reason, same thing. The cause of his actions in this case really is not important. What is important is that he abused a child.

I am thinking that had this been a small dog that was grabbed and slapped silly, there would be more sympathy.

  • Kim

I agree with the one comment…….Children do not have “off” buttons. Anyone with children understands that at times they’re inconsolable. That man should be ashamed of himself. A person shouldn’t slap their own children, much less someone else’s!!!!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com Rachael

What an a**! I hate crying children too but as a mother of three, I have to say sometimes it’s unavoidable. My children are very well behaved and when they do misbehave even if it is in public, they get spanked…by ME. Let some nut job even TRY to put his hands on one of my kids and I’ll drop him like the bag of dung he is. I agree that the mother should be slapped but not for letting her kid cry, she should be slapped for letting that dirt bag near her baby.

  • no one

how is that possible, ill slap that dirt bagoff

  • Melissa

I have gotten stuck on planes, trains and buses where children cry the entire flight or ride and the parents just smile and act like nothing is wrong. It’s annoying. Just tonight I was out food shopping and kids were running up and down the aisles. Seriously, why don’t parents do anything about it? I never acted like this as a child when I was out with my mom because I knew the consequences.

  • night

I know this guy did a bad thing. However on more than one occasion I have felt like sticking my foot out to trip some little snot nose kid, or felt like smacking a brat in his mother’s wagon as he touched all the merchandise. I have felt like whaloping a crying child but have restrained myself…..that is the only difference between this crazy man and me…i wanted to do it but did not want to go to jail…..i guess we are not that different him and me.

  • Carmela

I am very close to the mother of the child that was slapped and she is not an irresponsible mother who can not control her child. The man was a little off and I would say so are you other people who comment to support his behavior.

  • Amy

Carmela, so glad to hear the perspective of the people involved with this incident….i feel way too many people are making assumptions about this poor mom and her baby girl. It’s ridiculous. Hope they can get this behind them. I think most of us think this was absolutely a horrible thing. There is never any reason to abuse a child.

  • Kerrus

To all of you who are supporting this mans actions you’re idiots. I’m 99% sure you’d have felt differently if some whackjob slapped you for say talking too loudly, which ever way you look at it his behaviour was unacceptable. And lets be reasonable she’s a two year old baby. Babies cry for a whole host of reasons, lets say she was tired or maybe teething and this old fool hits her? Not cool. As I say just from of the comments I pity where society is heading when some think it’s ok to just resort to violence on a crying child. We were all kids and none of us where perfect. True you do see alot of kids misbehaving but if it bothers you so much then take it up with their parents… But no lets face it none of you tough bad asses would do, you’ll save your shit talking for the internet and to the broad who insists her two year knows fully how to behave in public..you’re a either a dirty liar or a despicable hard nose mama. Parting shot is a two year old got assaulted for crying and dupprting that is just some callous shit.

  • Jess

That man looks like a very mean individual. I have a 15 month old baby, but even at 2, if my child was simply crying because of not feeling good, I would shorten my trip out and try to calm her. But smacking a child does no good when they’re alrleady upset. And furthermore, if that Bastard had even threatened my baby that way, I already would have warned him to mind his own business, but TOUCH my child, and I’ll kill the motherf*cker. Scratch his eyes out. Plain and simple.

  • Kendi outraged

I am shocked by the people who say the mother should be smacked too and the little girl deserved it! I really hope none of you have kids and don’t ever want kids because that is not how you deal with children! Especially a 2 yr old. Ever hear of terrible 2′s? It’s because they are still learning! People are ignorant and have no idea what they are talking about. I have a 1 yr old and 2 yr old… both boys… both high energy boys with tempers. I don’t care if they were having a tantrum …NO ONE has the right to touch another persons child… let a lone slapping them. My word… if anyone touched either of my boys I’d probably have to be pulled off of the asshole… what the hell is wrong with him and you people who think it is ok!!!!
    Sad….very sad…

  • Kendi outraged

Not all kids are the same either. Not ALL kids listen or learn the same. None of you have NO IDEA why she was crying… you weren’t there. If you have that short of a temper… maybe you shouldn’t go to the store? Maybe you shouldn’t be around people? If your saying don’t bring your kid out of they are going to act like that. You can not predict what a child in going to act like. You just can’t… AND I GENERALLY DON’T SAY THIS… but all of you who agree are terribly wrong and again I hope NONE OF YOU HAVE CHILDREN… and if you do I feel so sorry for them. This old man should stay in prison because he is bitter and obvious he can’t control his 61 yr old old temper.

  • Kevin

How does any sane and rational person justify a strange man slapping a two year old? Those of you who find no problem with this are truly indicative of why this country is f—d…you are warped! Some of you who have no problem with a grown azz white man slapping a lil child (BLACK!) would have had the mother arrested for crulety and abuse if you had witnessed HER slapping her own child! You are spiritually sick. Now, the next time a Black man sees a rude and obnoxious little white child acting rude and obnoxious in public, I hope a Black man steps forward and lays hands on the white child….let’s see what happens then!

  • derrick

if i did that to my people he’d have to eat through a straw, ride in a wheel chair, and shit in a bag the rest of his life. That’s real talk.

  • ashleynoelle

are you people flipping insane..listen to the way you are speakin this is a 2 yr old child…anyone who agrees with that man deserves to be locked up as well cuz you are just a future offender …to all who talk smack about people that go to walmart you are on some serious bull SH** you act like theres a high class store to shop at to get household needs lets be real and to the chick who said she was there only one time in her life is full of it i dont believe it for a minute…ur all messed up

  • john

TO those who complain about the parents not being responsible with the kids

I am a very responsible parent i would die for my kids it breaks my heart when i have to say NO and they start to cry

why do they cry because as a child they only have to see something they LIKE and it becomes what they need to live so we have BROKEN there hearts into little pieces

this a hole probably doesn’t have any kids or common sense or he would see this as true he should be sent to jail and have his face plastered on the front page of every news paper in the state

he would get REHABILITATED then for sure
