Would you give Cougar Town a good or bad review?
Cougar Town with Courteney Cox premiered last night and even though I really, really wanted to like it, I was left scratching my head afterwards.
The biggest problem I had with the show is that Courteney was choosing high school boys as the ultimate prize. Like if she nailed a minor it would prove that “she still has it”.
It repulsed me!
Ok, I get the Cougar thing, but her flashing and oogling over 17-year-olds was a little uncomfortable and weird. I’d like to think that a Cougar is a woman over 35 who tries to score men in their early 20s, not teenagers!
[Right: Courteney's character flashing a boy on a bicycle]
If this show were the other way, meaning a man had the lead role and was drooling over cheerleaders at a football game (Courteney was drooling over a teen boy at a high school football game) can you imagine the outrage? Why is it allowed to be a woman instead?
I don’t know, it just rubbed me the wrong way even though I have a twisted and sometimes sick sense of humor. I did not find the humor in it.
Please give me your thoughts on the show, I’d love to hear them!

I did not watch this last night, as I wanted to wait and hear the reviews, and after reading this… I probably won’t be watching it. I’m a huge Courteney fan, but I’m not a fan of the underage-ness of it.
I did not really enjoy the show and am doubtful i will watch next week, but to be fair, she was just ogling over the high school boys, but was upset when their remarks upset her teenage son. Her “prize” was what seemed to be a college kid, or at least a 20s guy whom she met at a bar. i have seen lots of movies and shows when guys drool over very young looking girls and i am not sure my reaction was that of disgust, but to each their own.
by the way, i thought “Modern Family” was a lot better and funnier and recommend catching it on hulu.com if you missed it.
Why would any woman wish to be defined by whom she is dating…regardless of age. I found the entire concept insulting. It’s not who we are dating that gives us that “zing” it is who we see we look in the mirror. The entire show is dedicated to other people giving us what we should be giving ourselves. Respect.
Based on your review and the comments, I don’t think I’ll be watching this. Too bad since I like Courtney.

I’m knocking on 40 and I hated that the intro was Courtney’s character scrutinizing her body…then later, she has 2 scenes in her undies. If I looked like her – would not be concerned at all about my tummy. Could not relate to that storyline at all. Disappointed and will not watch again.
I liked it. I thought it was borderline with the young boys… but it was funny. And yeah, though strange- its amazing how crappy it feels to see life going on around you and not have anyone to tell you that you are beautiful. I thought the neighbor was a little over the top… very blah, boring, fat, etc… I think there is a way to make it “realistic” without being overdone. Yes, some women find 20 years of marriage routine… but though aspects are redundant, they still love their man (somewhere, deep down…). So, I say watch it- and form your own opinion, and give it a CHANCE next week. You know, if you watch the Pilot episode of “Three’s Company” you will see Chrissy as a smart and sassy woman. They morphed her into a ditzy blonde shortly after. Pilots are always different than the show they end up being.
I HATED it!!! absolutely creepy and more than a little sad. I actually felt embarassed for the actors involved. It smacked of desperation. I hope it dies a quick death and doesn’t take Modern Family (which was funny and well written) down with it. I won’t give it a second look….life’s too short to waste time on something this sleazy
I thought it was funny. The show’s focus was not on the high school boys. She was eye ballin a kid at the game but she thought he was older. Other than that I felt the comedy worked well and I will watch it again. But I do agree they went over the top scrutinizing her body. Im sure many women her age would kill to look like that so the intro was not believable
Love courtney, didn’t like the show.
I get it that women over 40 can feel lost, worry about their looks, and sometimes even just want a romp with a younger uncomplicated guy.
but this show missed the mark, courtney’s character came across as a desperate sex crazed stalker, not a woman who wants to have fun, or even a relationship.
no mother would ever say that kind of stuff in front of her high school age son, even if she was thinking it.
if I were to hazard a guess, I suspect there aren’t too many female writers on this show.
Only reason why I watched it was because it followed Modern Family ( which was good not great, but cute). Cougar Town on the other hand was a waste of time. It was actually painful to watch, the actor who plays her ex-husband needs some acting lesson – or his character needs a makecover – won’t be watching this show again.
Spicy,
I could not agree with you more! She portrayed a disgustingly irresponsible mother whose actions were inappropriate at best, those of a child stalker at worst. And, just like you, I like Courtney Cox. I can’t believe that she agrees to play the role.
Terrible show with terrible writing. I did not laugh once watching this show. Too bad..
