Chris Farley & David Spade in a recent Direct TV commercial [video]
When I first saw the Direct TV commercial starring David Spade and the late Chris Farley, I smiled, I laughed, and I missed Chris.
I don’t remember what I was doing when the commercial came on, I am generally multi-tasking always, but I know that the commercial had my attention from the very get go. Forget Direct TV, it was Chris Farley making us laugh again.
It’s a feel good commercial and when it comes on I stop what I’m doing and watch, everytime. But some people are offended by it. And you know those are probably the same people that are making “Michael Jackson autopsy photo” one of the hottest searches on Google right now. Serious.
(Ok, not all of you, don’t go all spider monkey on my ass!)
I’d like to poll some of you and see what Smack readers think about the subject. I’m curious to see if I am in the minority here. Do YOU think the commercial is offensive?

Not offensive but definitely questionable. Makes you wonder why David spade. Chris supposed best friend would do the commercial. It seems like he is saying he would rather watch direct tv than hang with chris. Very weird but not offensive.
I don’t know if I’d go so far as calling it offensive.. but inappropriate, to be sure.
Nah – it’s great! Celebs live on in a lot of advertising (Armstrong flooring anyone?) Chris Farley was the epitome of laughter and joy on tv and in movies. I’m grateful that Direct TV agrees and uses him as pitch man. His humor is timeless. Any opportunity for MORE Chris Farley and I am in. Viva La Chris Farley in our hearts and funny bones!!!!
Chris hated being overweight, how he looked was one of the reason he said he started using. If you wanted to pay homage to him, a gifted comedian wouldn’t you have used a funny bit – it wasn’t a funny commercial but it did manage to exploit his weight. David Spade who is also a comedian should have come up with something that at least tried to honor his friend instead of a cliche that broke Chris Farley’s heart and contributed do his death. I think that’s why most people think it was something that was used to make money for Spade, I can’t believe his family went along with this commercial it’s horrible – I bet it was hard to cash that check after seeing it.
When I first saw it, my reaction was that it was inappropriate. But when my husband asked why, I couldn’t really explain. It does rub me the wrong way though.
Inappropriate!
No way! Funny though because when I first saw it I was wondering how many people WOULD be offended…I just took it lightly and like you, missed his humor…
I didn’t think it was offensive. I was surprised to hear that there was so much controversy around it.
I thought it was inappropriate too-
I think it probably wouldn’t have bothered me as much if Spade was doing something other than impregnating playboy models. It seemed like he was using Chris for a paycheck, I guess.
You can’t think of it as David Spade and Chris Farley… It’s Richard and Tommy from Tommy Boy. That’s basically the idea of all their commercials… one of the characters talking straight of the movie and staying in character. The guy has been dead for 12 years… let it go. His issues and depression may have had something to do with the amount of drugs and alcohol he was pouring into this body… ya think? “he was depressed because he was overweight” oh shut up. Yeah, he was really on his own on that one… overweight and depressed in america? wow… that’s a new one. I’m fat and extremely wealthy / famous… yup, time for more cocaine and morphine… what has the world done to me?
