Pearl Jam’s “Alive” on Storytellers
Well, for my first post back, I want it to be about something I actually give two sh*ts about. So the way I came up with the idea for this post is this..
When I got home after driving 14.5 hours home from Montana (we’ll get to that later..) and finally sat down to do some work, I clicked on the boob tube and checked my DVR for things I had recorded while out of town, completely forgetting that I had recorded Pearl Jam’s “Storytellers”. I was thrilled to see it was among my recordings, so I turned it on. And let me tell you, it turned ME on.
Probably my most favorite performance during this amazing show was “Alive“. Not because it’s the band’s most well known song or because it’s simply one of my personal favorites, but because Vedder took the time to explain the song to the audience. Believe it or not, the chorus originally had quite a different meaning than what most of us have believed all these years. In this clip Eddie explains that Pearl Jam fans changed this song from a song of desperation and angst, to one of hope and rebirth, if you will.
Even if you don’t stick around for the performance part of this video, at least watch the first three minutes. It will leave you with a whole new respect for Vedder, not only as a musician, but as a human being.
Amen, brother.
