Conan O’Brien Quits Tonight Show [Statement]

Conan O’Brien to QUIT The Tonight Show?

Conan O’Brien says he will quit The Tonight Show if Jay Leno’s show is moved to 11:35pm.

Conan O’Brien released the following statement:

People of Earth:

In the last few days, I’ve been getting a lot of sympathy calls, and I want to start by making it clear that no one should waste a second feeling sorry for me. For 17 years, I’ve been getting paid to do what I love most and, in a world with real problems, I’ve been absurdly lucky. That said, I’ve been suddenly put in a very public predicament and my bosses are demanding an immediate decision.

Six years ago, I signed a contract with NBC to take over The Tonight Show in June of 2009. Like a lot of us, I grew up watching Johnny Carson every night and the chance to one day sit in that chair has meant everything to me. I worked long and hard to get that opportunity, passed up far more lucrative offers, and since 2004 I have spent literally hundreds of hours thinking of ways to extend the franchise long into the future. It was my mistaken belief that, like my predecessor, I would have the benefit of some time and, just as important, some degree of ratings support from the prime-time schedule. Building a lasting audience at 11:30 is impossible without both.

But sadly, we were never given that chance. After only seven months, with my Tonight Show in its infancy, NBC has decided to react to their terrible difficulties in prime-time by making a change in their long-established late night schedule.

Last Thursday, NBC executives told me they intended to move the Tonight Show to 12:05 to accommodate the Jay Leno Show at 11:35. For 60 years the Tonight Show has aired immediately following the late local news. I sincerely believe that delaying the Tonight Show into the next day to accommodate another comedy program will seriously damage what I consider to be the greatest franchise in the history of broadcasting. The Tonight Show at 12:05 simply isn’t the Tonight Show. Also, if I accept this move I will be knocking the Late Night show, which I inherited from David Letterman and passed on to Jimmy Fallon, out of its long-held time slot. That would hurt the other NBC franchise that I love, and it would be unfair to Jimmy.

So it has come to this: I cannot express in words how much I enjoy hosting this program and what an enormous personal disappointment it is for me to consider losing it. My staff and I have worked unbelievably hard and we are very proud of our contribution to the legacy of The Tonight Show. But I cannot participate in what I honestly believe is its destruction. Some people will make the argument that with DVRs and the Internet a time slot doesn’t matter. But with the Tonight Show, I believe nothing could matter more.

There has been speculation about my going to another network but, to set the record straight, I currently have no other offer and honestly have no idea what happens next. My hope is that NBC and I can resolve this quickly so that my staff, crew, and I can do a show we can be proud of, for a company that values our work.

Have a great day and, for the record, I am truly sorry about my hair; it’s always been that way.

Yours,

Conan

Good for him!

He really got jerked around by NBC. Moving his family & entire staff from one coast to another, giving up a show which has worked for him for many years…only to have it end like this.

Do you think he is making the right decision?

I do.

What NBC Universal is doing is quite possibly the stupidest, most classless thing I have seen in a long time. Conan has a lot of cache in the industry and with the public, but it will be a long cold day before I watch anything on that channel, or buy anything advertised on it either, it’s just a dirty, snaky decision that benefits Jay Leno who can’t hold an audience anymore because he’s not funny or interesting. Universal will probably suffer as well but there will be a backlash. Whoever is running NBC needs to be sacked, he has no clue what the viewing audiences wants, ratings aside because as Conan pointed out the audience is gone when the Leno show comes on and doesn’t return as much as anyone would like by the time Conan comes on. This is why they are in the tank and have been for years, bad leadership and now a total lack of respect for real talent.

I couldn’t have said it better myself, Jinxy.

God I love Conan. Seriously…does anyone on the planet think that Jay Leno is funny?????? He is horrible. I don’t understand what NBC is doing? I think that they would be making a really stupid mistake. Is Leno’s show getting better ratings than Conan? What is this world coming to?

I am very pissed off about this! I have watched Coney for about 10 yrs now and I think what NBC is doing to him is absolutely disgusting. Leno had his time to shine and chose to retire, how is that Conan’s fault or Jimmy’s or Carson’s. All of their shows will be affected just to accomodate Leno. I only watch NBC to watch Conan’s show. It was a big adjustment when he moved to Cali and took over the Tonight Show..they had him off of the air for 3 months then a new time slot, we just get used to it and they throw this wrnech in the mix. Ive already written a strongly worded letter to NBC that most likely fell by the wayside, but still, Im angry and wanted them to know it. They will realize that this is a huge mistake and go crawling back and hopefully he is somewhere else making more money and higher ratings for the new network and he tells them to kiss his pasty white ass!!

I love Conan and feel like NBC and Jay Leno are totally dicking him around. Good for him for standing up for himself and not bowing down. I totally support him.

P.S. Just read the above comment by Jenifer–I call him “Coney”, too! :D

Personally I perfer Letterman .but what NBC did to Conan is tastely and they should let him keep his 60 million and either let him go to ABC, or Fox .Mr O’brien worked his ass off and was’nt given a fair shake at making the tonight show work, I have watch the new Tonight show and have to confess it is different than what I was used to with Jay Leno . I would think that is the reason why O’Brien got the Tonight show in the first place , How can you ask a person who has moved his family and that of his staff from New York To LA and not at least give him to years to get his show together .Letterman used to kick Jays Leno butt until they retool the show and gave him the support of the network .Conan deserves the same respect .Neither Jay or Conan can be blamed for the mess NBC and their suits ,bigwigs made ,but by not Give O’Brien the same respect Leon recieved they are just making a bigger mistake. Now wonder NBC is in last place in the ratings. When you hire losers to make the big choices this is what you get. I hope Conan fight tooth and nail to keep his job and mess up NBC great plans .Looks good them .
P.s whats going to happen to Carson Daily ??
