Teddy Pendergrass is dead at 59 years-old
R&B singer Teddy Pendergrass is dead at the age of 59.
Pendergrass underwent colon cancer surgery eight months ago and never quite recovered.
His son, Teddy Pendergrass II said his father died in Philadelphia at the Bryn Mawr Hospital Wednesday night. He added, “To all his fans who loved his music, thank you. He will live on through his music.”
Pendergrass suffered a terrible spinal cord injury on March 18th, 1982 when the brakes failed on his Rolls Royce and he hit a tree. He was left paralyzed from the waist down and had limited use of his arms. But that didn’t stop him from making music. In 1983 he recorded “Love Language.” He later retired in 2006 but continued to help raise money for charities with his talents.
One of the truly great soul singers. RIP, Teddy P.
Teddy Pendergrass was a true soul brother, something that’s very hard to find these days even outside of the music industry. You will be missed, sir. Reminds me of the song by the Commodores called ‘Nightshift’; “Gonna be some sweet sounds, coming down, on the nightshift… I bet you’re singing proud, I bet you pull a crowd.”
