John Mayer “N-Word” Apologies

John Mayer apologizes for using the N-word

Once people caught wind of John Mayer’s Playboy interview yesterday and his use of the N-word, a sh*tstorm ensued on twitter.

John has since apologized for his use of the N-word:

“Re: using the ‘N word’ in an interview: I am sorry that I used the word. And it’s such a shame that I did because the point I was trying to make was in the exact opposite spirit of the word itself. It was arrogant of me to think I could intellectualize using it, because I realize that there’s no intellectualizing a word that is so emotionally charged. I should have never said the word and I will never say it again.”

John Mayer Playboy interview here.

Now, I know a lot of people are quick to call him a racist, but I disagree. I don’t think he was saying it in a derogatory way, but really, is the word itself is extremely derogatory. I hate the word myself, and have wondered for years why it is that the same people that use the word in jest, or in music, are offended when other people use it. In my opinion NOBODY should use the word. It’s an ugly, ugly word, and I hate that it is thrown around in rap music and in “slang”. I don’t care what color you are, it shouldn’t be a term that is used, ever.

So let’s bury the N-word once and for all. And as we said in my Ustream last night, anyone who uses it should be publicly flogged. Just my opinion, but dammit, I think I’m right.

I’m surprised Mayer even talked about his D**** The N wordetc..in his music he never came across as such an idiot! I have no problem with him not wanting to date black women, they probably dont want him anyway, my problem is with the way he said it as if hes bettet than blacks a lot of blacks enjoy his music. i doubt the will now

I think it was not very smart of him to use that word, or to have talked the way he did about his personal/sexual preferences, but honestly, I don’t think he meant any of it the way people are taking it.
If you read the article in it’s entirety you get a different flavor from him. He’s not going around trying to piss people off or stir up controversy–on the contrary–he just wants to be left alone! With that said, he needs to realize that he’s not gonna be left alone and start dealing with his fame in a more mature and yes, politically correct manner. This coming from someone who HATES being politically correct!!
    Just my thoughts…

i think he’s a big ol’ idiot who is way to impressed with himself. talk about verbal diarrhea. he thinks he so clever and witty but in reality he is another guy who is just full of himself.

Grow up people. It’s just a word and the INTENT of its use is all that matters. He meant no harm so STFU about the “racist” stuff. I don’t like Mayer either, but I dislike racial baiters even more.

I’m disappointed. Yea it’s just a word and his comment on African American woman was not needed. I really appreciated his music. Not because he has an amazing voice and can rip the guitar, but i felt he had a message and spoke thru his songs. Now i’m baffled. And thought he was much deeper that those silly comments. He lost me as a fan. I hope that in time he’ll reflect on this moment and finally realize his mistake.
