21-year-old Cameron Dabaghi has been indentified as the young man who jumped from the Empire State Building yesterday.

Dabaghi jumped to his death at approximately 6:30 pm Tuesday night. According to reports Cameron had a running start before jumping off the observation deck of the building (which is located on the 86th floor) and clearing the barrier.

Dabaghi was a Yale University student from Austin, Texas. His sister also attended Yale. Poor baby girl, to have to deal with such a traumatic event…

Witnesses say that when the jumper’s body hit the ground it sounded like a “sickening thud” and a giant “boom”. One person near the mangled body attempted to cover the gruesome remains with his umbrella.

Such a sad story. What a way to go out. I cannot imagine committing suicide to begin with, but DAMN, to do it this way would be my absolute LAST choice. I really feel for this kid’s friends and family. What an awful, awful thing to deal with. Suicide is so selfish in my opinion. It’s so traumatic to those who loved the person who committed the heinous act.

The other thing about suicide is that sh*t passes! Whatever problem you have at the time won’t be there 10 years down the road. Life is full of obstacles, man. Don’t waste your life over something that won’t matter years down the road.

Just sad. Hopefully the kid is in peace now.

    Such an incredibly sad story. Its so sad to think some people are so disturbed…especially to end your life like that.

    The thing about this is that he could have killed others, it’s a miracle he didn’t hit someone on the ground. If you want to die, fine but don’t take someone else with you. I think it’s the iconography of that place and that none had successfully jumped to death from there in a long time. I live near a place that is a magnet for suicides, people come from all over the world to die at this specific spot – It happened at the Eiffel Tower, bridges, and of course famous buildings. I feel for his family but this was a man on a mission and it seems only at that spot. Problems are always temporary, death is so permanent, if only he had reached out for help.

    It is very sad but I agree – also very selfish. Especially considering the way he did it, he could have easily killed one of more people. Also, no-one wants to see that, it’s not fair to inflict such horror on people. I guess he obviously wasn’t in his right mind so I can’t imagine these things were considered at all. Very sad :(

    I normally appreciate your commentary but I am really disappointed that you are calling suicide “selfish” and talking about how problems in life are temporary. Mental illness is serious and people do not choose to suffer from depression. And to the person who said that it was “one last stunt” — wouldn’t you want attention if you felt that no one cared about you? Feeling alone and like nobody can help you is a common symptom of depression.

    I guess that I am saying is that we should be more aware of the seriousness of mental illness instead of criticizing people who suffer from it. There are many people around us who suffer from mental illness and if we project this image to them, they are less likely to get help.

    Kate, I think of suicide as being selfish because my father did it, and never thought about what it would do to those who loved him. My grandfather and grandmother died in a murder-suicide and my brother shot himself (but lived) then died in a car wreck 10 yrs later. My family has been ravaged by suicide. Ad yes, I do think it is a selfish thing to do because it really fucks up those left behind.
