Bret Michaels on Oprah [Video]
In the interview, Bret spoke with Oprah about the moment it happened. He said it happened suddenly and described it as an “explosion” inside his head. Bret said it felt like a “pop,” what came next was an incredible headache which doctors call a thunderclap. This was the moment Bret’s blood vessel burst, leaking blood into his brain.
Bret went on to tell Oprah that the pain was intense. It spread from his temple to the back of his spine. And no, there were no warning signs leading up to this point.
That’s when Bret’s girlfriend, Kristi Gibson, took him to the hospital. Bret told Oprah that it was the longest car ride of his life. Once Bret and Kristi arrived at the hospital he said that the pain was so bad that he just wanted to stay there and hold his head. He told Kristi to not get anyone. Luckily Kristi didn’t listen to Bret and went to get help. That’s when the doctors came and immediately knew Bret was in trouble.
Bret says he remembers asking God to get him through it. He told Oprah that he remembers hearing the doctors tell Kristi that if he had any children to bring them to the hospital. Bret said at that time he asked doctors if he had any chance to live. If he did, he said he did not want his children seeing him like that.
Oprah spoke with Rain, Bret’s daughter, and the sweet little thing told Oprah what she remembered. She said that she thought of all the things she and her dad had done together. She worried that he might not live. As she told Oprah this, Bret’s eyes welled up.
Bret’s sense of humor was intact throughout the interview, at one point he joked if he was going to die, he wanted to go out “rocking”. And that meant going out with his trademark bandanna on, his boots on – and even a cape. Heh.
He also joked about his brain scan and the doctors showing it on TV. He said he worried they would show a neurosurgeon’s brain first, a normal, big brain, then show his and it would be the size of a walnut in his cranium. But that’s Bret, always joking.
Bret’s doctor put things into perspective and said Bret was unable to stay awake when he first saw him. He added that 40,000 people a year in the U.S. have a brain hemorrhage. Only 20% of people who have this happen to them fully recover. Bret was one of the lucky ones.
As for his condition now, Bret says that he is undergoing therapy twice daily. He is still having difficulty with his lower extremities, has a stiff neck and suffers from headaches. Considering what he has been through, I’d say he is doing pretty good.
Look for Bret Michaels on the Celebrity Apprentice finale this weekend. Rock on, Bret!
