Jonathan Metz amputates his own arm, credits MacGuyver
It happened on June 7th when Metz went into the basement of his home to clean his 60-year old furnace boiler. After dropping a tool he somehow managed to get his arm wedged in the furnace. The more he tried to free his arm, the more swollen it became, making it impossible to get it out. He screamed for help for 12-hours without anyone hearing him.
During a press conference he said: “It was an instinctual response to an impossible situation.”
He said he began to smell his arm rotting, it had been crushed. For hours he contemplated his next move. Then it came to him, “What would MacGyver do if he were here?” Yes, that’s really what he thought!
Jonathan Metz says that what he did next, he did for his family, his fiancée and his dogs, all of whom he loves immensely.
Jonathan grabbed a power saw that was nearby and began to amputate his own arm, between the elbow and shoulder. Jonathan didn’t quite complete the amputation, instead his body went into shock and he passed out. When he awoke he managed to pull the boiler release valve, which released disgusting water, but it was water, and after a day of not having any, it looked pretty good to him. He described the situation: “What emerged was the most disgusting orange water I’d ever seen, and yet it was the best looking water I’d ever seen. I actually used the flip-flop I’d been wearing and it was covered in unspeakable things, but I managed to scoop a couple mouthfuls of this hideous, hideous water and it was enough to make me feel mentally like there was a way out of this.”
The water gave him hope. But Jonathan Metz wasn’t rescued from the situation until Tuesday night, June 8th, when his colleagues became worried that he hadn’t showed for a softball game. A friend came by his house, saw his truck was there and that his dog was barking. The friend became worried and immediately phoned the police. The police arrived then called firefighters who completed the amputation on Metz’s arm. Jonathan Metz was in and out of consciousness as the amputation was performed.
“I’m just an average guy and if I can go through this, people would be surprised what you’re capable of.”
Metz’s family and friends have started up a website in hopes of raising money for a prosthetic arm for Metz. If you’d like to donate, visit helpjonmetz.com.
Way to go, brother. You’re definitely a survivor.
