Jason Bateman iPhone Controversy

Jason Bateman in iPhone controversy

Did Justin Bateman receive special treatment at an Apple store while waiting in line for the iPhone 4?

A couple thousand people had been waiting in line for hours, Jason included, when he was taken from the line and escorted inside the store past all the people who had gotten there before him.

Witnesses claim that people became angry and began questioning why Bateman was allowed to cut in line. Some people reportedly booed the actor as he went inside the store to get his iPhone 4 before everyone else.

Jason Bateman is denying that he was ever booed in line or that he received preferential treatment from the Apple store. He claims they were protecting him from the paparazzi. He posted to his Twitter account: “There wasn’t one boo. Not one hiss. The Apple guy brought me in away from the paparazzi. Period. I was content in line. I wish I’d stayed.”

But witness Andrew Hamer tells Us magazine there was only one photographer “who kept a respectful distance.”

Another witness, Angela Mayhew said of the incident: “It was so much drama! It was the most surreal experience. People were so pissed because that line was ridiculous. I heard commotion in the back. I thought someone was fighting. Then he strolls right on by with the Genius Bar guys and suddenly people in my area started to yell, ‘What the hell is going on?’”

The line for the iPhone started around 3:30AM. Bateman arrived at approximately 4:15AM. But when doors opened at 10:00AM, guess who got to go inside first? Jason Bateman.

Jason’s buddy Keith Olbermann has said that people were booing the paparazzi, but witnesses are saying otherwise.

Mayhew continues, “It was loud, passive-aggressive anger. There was a chorus of boos and then people shouting, ‘What?’ and ‘We’ve been here for hours!’ We were patiently waiting before then, that just made everyone’s blood boil. Plus, people starting yelling at the Apple guys too. They escorted him like he was a pretty big deal.”

So were any of you readers actually there to witness this? Let me know if you were, I’d love to hear your side of the story. For the rest of you, from what we know, do you think Jason Bateman received special treatment when buying his iPhone 4?

I wasn’t there but I am sure he got special treatment…I am just surprised it took him so long to get it. It is pretty crappy, but that is celeb reality. If they offer it (special treatment), celebs will take it.

I figure if people say celebrities should expect to be hounded by the paparazzi for being in the public eye then they should be able to get special treatment because they’re in the public eye. Get the good with the bad…

  • Former Grove Employee

I know the Store Manager of the Grove and he wants to be a star f*cker, or thinks he is a star F*cker. He was a former drummer and is trying to use his position to better his entertainment career. He’s a total douche bag and lots of people hate him. I used to work the Grove and handle a lot of the high profile customers and he would watch me like a hawk to make sure I didn’t give any of my non-celebrity or even my celebrity clients preferential treatment because he said everyone gets treated equally.

Well, I guess he is a hypocrite because he can pick and choose who gets special treatment to gain their favor. Just ask Eddie Izzard, who has suddenly become the Store Manager’s “Friend” just because he gets put in front of the Genius Bar.

I’m not saying that I agree with this whole situation, but honestly, it’s one person jumping the line…does it really make a difference? I’d be pissed if it was Bateman + entourage, but its not as if he held up the entire line. Sure, he got preferential treatment, but its not like he demanded it. From what you reported, Spicy, he seemed really humble and apologetic. Agreed with Lisa, its just a phone. I also agree with the former Grove employee, the staff are more at fault for Bateman’s line jumping than himself.
