JetBlue flight attendant Steven Slater quits via Emergency Exit
JetBlue flight attendant Steven Slater was having one of those days.
As the JetBlue flight he was working on had just landed a passenger trying to retrieve their bag from the overhead smacked him in the head with it. Words were exchanged, and the passenger promptly told Slater to “F***off.”
(UPDATE: We now know that the woman, who was totally out of control and demanded she take her bags out of the overhead compartment before the flight had come to a complete stop, hit Steven in the head with the overhead compartment door, not the luggage. She did so maliciously!)
It was soon after that Steven Slater decided he was done with his flight attendant profession with JetBlue. He completely lost it, upset at the way the passenger had treated him.
Slater threw a total fit on his way out, shocking passengers and co-workers alike. One passenger said Slater said: “I’ve had it. That’s it!” as he grabbed his carry-on bags, took a couple beers from inventory, popped one of them open, then escaped via the emergency exit chute. As he stormed away on the tarmac he threw his company tie to the ground.
After leaving in a huff, Steven Slater went home to his boyfriend where he was found by the police.
Police were skeptical if the JetBlue flight attendant had really slid down the emergency exit chute, but he admitted that’s exactly what he’d done: “Oh yes I did! I threw them down first and I went down after,” he said.
Police later caught up with Steven Slater at his home, in bed with his boyfriend. “He left with a big smile on his face,” said Slater’s neighbor Curt Karkowski. He has been charged with reckless endangerment and criminal mischief.
A JetBlue co-worker, who was also on that same flight says that she is envious of Slater and doesn’t blame him for losing his cool. “It’s something we all fantasize about,” she said. “But we have kids and a mortgage or are just too chicken – or sane – to go through with (it).”
Gawd, I love this story! Who hasn’t wanted to storm out of a job at some point? Speaking of, my girlfriend did it just yesterday. (Hey Min, still have a job today?)
Working with the public is so tough sometimes. Some people can just be jerks, and they think since you’re working for them that they can subject you to abuse. After working with the public for years I truly try and go out of my way to be kind to those who are busting their azz for me. I think those who treat people the worst are those who have never worked with the public.
Have you ever stormed out of a job? Did you regret it? Tell me about it!
Try working for T-Mobile!! Holy bejesus! It truly is hell, but it does have it’s ups and downs. I’ve been there for 3 years and I put up with it because of the money and the the amount of hours I receive. Funny this story should happen because I went CRAZY on a customer because she previously had a bad experience with T-Mobile. Mind you, not our store, but at Wal-Mart, because she’s cheap and decided to activate there. Anyway, she came in with an attitude and was ready to pick a fight. My coworker was outside with our manager going over some stuff. This lady I was helping questioned my integrity and needless to say, I walked out, leaving her in the store alone. She told me I was stupid to work here, that I couldn’t get a real job. Quite funny she should say that because her name tag on her scrubs said she was a receptionist. I told her off, told her that this was a piss on job to help pay my way through my MASTERS IN NURSING and to be sure she never comes across me in a hospital. Yeah, then I walked out. Of my 3 years being there, I’ve done that one other time and the man apologized to me for being a jerk and also thanked me for making him realize how much of a douche he was being. Working at a customer service job is so difficult at times. I’ve even had a MAN try to punch me in the face before. Ah, the good life. But yes, working with the public sucks… It will be much nicer when I’ll be working with the public when their in pain, they’ll be begging to stop the pain, not curse me out. Hopefully at least. (:
I used to be a flight attendant… it was torture! People have no idea how horrible these companies are to work for. My company had our crew fly for 25 hours straight, which is illegal. They had us logged as being in the hotel resting when we were actually grounded on the runway working with a 767 packed full of passengers, and they doctored our flight pairing so they wouldn’t get fined from the FAA AND they got to pay us less because our resting hours are minimal pay, as opposed to our working hours. I lasted 6 months and after that flight I had finally had enough. Good for Steven! The only thing I enjoyed was the friends I made and the places I got to see. Jet Blue must be fuming because those slides are rediculously expensive to fix after they are deployed! In flight training you basically fail if you “blow a slide” by accident…not to mention you can critically or even fatally injure someone when it goes. Thank goodness no one got hurt…still pretty damn funny though!
Yeah Spicy… no regrets though. I was in sales, my boss told me if I was late again he would fire me, this was my second time in 5 yrs. He pointed in my face and stabbed me in the forehead with his finger!!!! That was it, I blacked out and grabbed the edges of my desk and flipped it on the floor – EVERYTHING smashed to the floor. I bent over picked up my lipstick and etc. stepped through the pile of mess, told him to kiss my a$$ and stormed out. Now that I’m saddled with responsiblities (kids, mortg, etc.) I’m so glad I did it because for one time only I didn’t have to take anybody’s $hit!
Spicy, I still have my job my dear :) And got an apology.
Try being a waiter for 24 years! 11 different places, never stormed out myself, but the temptation was there all the time. I’ve seen others do it, and was super-envious because I knew if I did, the rent wouldn’t be paid, I’d lose a recommendation, etc. Especially now, when the job market is a BITCH. You’re probably wondering why I stayed in the biz all these years, and it’s simple; good money, and cash flow. There must’ve been thousands of times I could’ve told a customer off; good thing it’s all a blur. I’ve made my share of mistakes, but people can treat you really badly. Especially when they get drunk, and if you cut them off, you lose the tip, or sometimes the entire bill! Good for Steven that he took a stand(and a couple beers, heh). He’ll probably go on a few talk shows, maybe get a book deal; hell, maybe some restaurant will hire him.
Not to change the subject, but did anyone notice the hot cop in the pic? ;)
@ Celina, I bet Steven noticed. He probably got off on the cop cuffing him.
OMG Spicy I love you even more now. I too was a server for 14 years (starting early in high school with a permit), and yes I have WANTED to sooo many times. I too, go out of my way to treat people that work with the public, super nice and probably even over tip (to the ones who take tips). Since nobody was hurt, I love this story. Well, he is off to better things now (at least after he gets released from jail). Ha!
