JetBlue flight attendant Steven Slater quits via Emergency Exit
As the JetBlue flight he was working on had just landed a passenger trying to retrieve their bag from the overhead smacked him in the head with it. Words were exchanged, and the passenger promptly told Slater to “F***off.”
(UPDATE: We now know that the woman, who was totally out of control and demanded she take her bags out of the overhead compartment before the flight had come to a complete stop, hit Steven in the head with the overhead compartment door, not the luggage. She did so maliciously!)
It was soon after that Steven Slater decided he was done with his flight attendant profession with JetBlue. He completely lost it, upset at the way the passenger had treated him.
Slater threw a total fit on his way out, shocking passengers and co-workers alike. One passenger said Slater said: “I’ve had it. That’s it!” as he grabbed his carry-on bags, took a couple beers from inventory, popped one of them open, then escaped via the emergency exit chute. As he stormed away on the tarmac he threw his company tie to the ground.
After leaving in a huff, Steven Slater went home to his boyfriend where he was found by the police.
Police were skeptical if the JetBlue flight attendant had really slid down the emergency exit chute, but he admitted that’s exactly what he’d done: “Oh yes I did! I threw them down first and I went down after,” he said.
Police later caught up with Steven Slater at his home, in bed with his boyfriend. “He left with a big smile on his face,” said Slater’s neighbor Curt Karkowski. He has been charged with reckless endangerment and criminal mischief.
A JetBlue co-worker, who was also on that same flight says that she is envious of Slater and doesn’t blame him for losing his cool. “It’s something we all fantasize about,” she said. “But we have kids and a mortgage or are just too chicken – or sane – to go through with (it).”
Gawd, I love this story! Who hasn’t wanted to storm out of a job at some point? Speaking of, my girlfriend did it just yesterday. (Hey Min, still have a job today?)
Working with the public is so tough sometimes. Some people can just be jerks, and they think since you’re working for them that they can subject you to abuse. After working with the public for years I truly try and go out of my way to be kind to those who are busting their azz for me. I think those who treat people the worst are those who have never worked with the public.
Have you ever stormed out of a job? Did you regret it? Tell me about it!
