Patrick Swayze and wife Lisa Niemi
Today is the one-year anniversary of actor Patrick Swayze’s death and his wife Lisa Niemi opened up to People magazine to talk about this emotional day.
Lisa told People: “In some ways I look at the anniversary and I think, ‘It’s either going to knock me down or it’s going to make me stronger. And I know I’m stronger now. The fact that I’ve had some good days definitely gives me hope that I can have more.”
One year ago today, September 14th, Patrick Swayze died from pancreatic cancer. He had battled the disease for two-and-a-half years before losing the fight.
His wife Lisa now works with the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, helping to being awareness to the deadly disease. Lisa says that she doesn’t want her husband’s death to be in vain so she chose to be active in the community. “It’s a merciless disease,” she says. “If Patrick being sick can help somebody else, it’s the highest possible honor I could help him have.”
What does Lisa plan on doing on the anniversary of Patrick’s death? “I’m looking at doing some things like picking out the most beautiful tree ever,” she says, “and planting it in an extraordinary spot.”
Lisa says the wind chimes on her back porch remind her of her loving husband. “Sometimes there won’t be any wind, so I like to think it’s him. I do sense his presence, and I like that. Just because he’s gone now doesn’t mean that love doesn’t go on.”
