Joaquin Phoenix returns to David Letterman, 9/22/2010
Joaquin Phoenix is back!
And this this time he’s shaved, intelligible and handsome. After his film, I’m Still Here, was released, the real Joaquin Phoenix finally emerged from underneath all the scruff, the sunglasses and the invisible haze that surrounded him like Pig Pen’s dirt cloud for more than a year.
In the first interview since his “rebirth” Joaquin Phoenix met back with David Letterman on The Late Show Wednesday night. It was so refreshing to see Joaquin back as Joaquin. Dave joked about the year-and-a-half that Joaquin was in character saying, “It was like you slipped and hit your head in the tub.”
As for the film, I’m Still Here, Letterman asks Joaquin, “Who’s idea was it?” To which Joaquin replies, “It was both of our ideas,” referring to himself and Casey Affleck who directed the film.
David Letterman: “And the idea being what?”
Joaquin Phoenix: “We wanted to do a film that explored ‘celebrity’ and explored the relationship between the media and the consumers and the celebrities themselves.”
Since Joaquin’s last appearance on Late Night with David Letterman there has been a lot of discussion about whether or not Dave was in on the joke during the bizarre interview. This time Dave sets the record straight.
David Letterman: ”All I really care about is me in this. (Laughter) Now, did I know anything about this?”
Joaquin Phoenix: ”No.”
David Letterman: “Was there a script that you and I were working with?”
Joaquin Phoenix: “No.”
David Letterman: “Thank you very much.”
Anyhow, check out the Joaquin Phoenix interview on David Letterman in the clip above, it’s great. I adore Joaquin and love that he is willing to go such great lengths to play a character. He is an incredibly gifted actor and unconventionally hot. Heh.
