Marie Osmond talks about her son’s death
Marie Osmond’s son Michael committed suicide on February 26th, 2010 while the entertainer was performing her Las Vegas show at the Flamingo. She says he had called her around 8:45pm, just as she was about to go on stage. She couldn’t take the call from her son. Approximately 45 minutes later he jumped to his death from his 8th floor apartment window.
Oprah asked Marie Osmond about her son’s death and if she was still in the “would’ve . . . could’ve . . . should’ve” stage. Marie replied that she thinks that stage never goes away really (I agree) but she also pointed out that if you are constantly wondering those things you aren’t really living. I agree with that, too.
Marie Osmond told Oprah that before her son’s death, Michael had tried to commit suicide once before, about the time she was on Dancing with the Stars. Afterwards he swore he would never do it again.
Some people have suspected that Marie Osmond’s son was gay and afraid to come out, and that may have led to his death. However, Marie wanted to quash those rumors because, she said, they simply aren’t true. “My son was not gay. He wanted to be married and have a family and travel all over the world. And it wouldn’t matter if he was. I have a daughter who is gay, and it was my daughter who was offended by it, like, ‘What? All gay kids commit suicide?’ She really wanted it cleared up.”
Marie seemed extremely close with her son Michael, and it was truly heartbreaking to see her grieve her son on Oprah’s show. She is a strong woman, and a lucky one. She has amazing support via her close-knit family.
