Madonna’s HARD CANDY gym
Madonna opened her first gym, HARD CANDY, in Mexico City on Monday, complete with pop art, Warhol style murals of herself at the entry way.
Madonna’s gym was named after her latest album, HARD CANDY, which she describes as a term combining “hard body” and “eye candy.” You can’t help but wonder if she is describing herself. “It’s a sexy name that gives you the opportunity to have fun and to build strength as far as the imagination will allow,” says the Material Girl.
Madonna opened the HARD CANDY gym Monday after a ribbon cutting ceremony, then she proceeded to teach a dance class for 20 lucky members which included music by Paul Oakenfold, the DJ who opened her last tour.
The HARD CANDY gym has hand selected equipment, each piece being chosen by Madonna herself. She not only picked the machines, she also selected the graphics and the colors of the HARD CANDYgym.
Madonna’s gym offers yoga classes and, of course, she had a hand in the choreography. She also handpicked the bamboo flooring which was imported from China and the HARD CANDY yoga studio includes a Iyengar yoga wall and a Zen-like balcony.
Of the 30,000-sq. ft. HARD CANDY gym, Madonna says: “If any of you have seen my shows, you know that I don’t skimp on them and the same is true for the gym. We spend what it takes to make a globally first-class gym.”
Madonna says she chose Mexico City as the first location of the HARD CANDY gym because she loves the people and the culture. “Our plan is to use Mexico as a place to fine-tune our brand and then expand it to other countries and, in the long term, develop a global brand that includes the United States.”
The HARD CANDY gym in Mexico City is located in the prestigious Bosques de las Lomas neighborhood. As for Madonna’s gym being located in Mexcio amid all the recent violence, Madonna says she’s not worried. “A lot of places I go are dangerous, like Tel Aviv or Rio (de Janeiro), but that never stops me from going there and putting on a show. I have good security. I don’t worry about that.”
HARD CANDY gym membership costs $160 a month, after a one-time fee of $830 which includes the first two months. For that price, it had better be nice.
So the question is, do you think Madonna’s HARD CANDY gym will succeed – or flop? Take the poll!
