Jeannine Edwards, Ron Franklin: ESPN Controversy [PHOTOS]

ESPN radio announcer Ron Franklin called female reporter Jeannine Edwards “sweetcakes” and “A-hole” during a production meeting Friday, resulting in his suspension.

Just before the Chick-fil-A Bowl on Friday, Jeannine Edwards and Ron Franklin attended a pre-game production meeting with ESPN staffers. Also in attendance were ESPN announcers Ed Cunningham and Rod Gilmore. At some point during the meeting the group began to discuss Rod Gilmore’s wife, Alameda, being elected as mayor (CA).

The three men talked, and when sideline reporter Jeannine Edwards chimed in, Ron Franklin said smugly: “Why don’t you leave this to the boys, sweetcakes.”

Obviously shocked by the lack of respect that Ron Franklin had showed her, Jeannine Edwards responded by saying, “Don’t call me sweetcakes, I don’t like being talked to like that.”

Franklin then mocked, “Okay then, a–hole.”

Aha! One of the good ol’ boys . . . stuck in the 1950′s!

Jeannine Edwards reported the incident immediately with ESPN management and Ron Franklin was pulled from the Chick-fil-A Bowl. However, a last minute replacement could not be found and he still called the game along with Ed Cunningham and Jeannine Edwards. He was pulled from the Fiesta Bowl, and replaced by ESPN announcer Dave Lamont.

Ron Franklin signed a 2-Year agreement with ESPN back in July which calls for him to work 35 events per year.

ESPN is not commenting on his employment status at the moment.

What a sexist jerk! Glad he is getting busted for it.

Jeannine Edwards is a b!t*h. I used to be an associate producer with ESPN and I know her pretty well. It’s about time someone called her out. Women don’t need to be reporting from the sidelines anyway. All they do is cause trouble. The football players(and their wives and girlfriends) don’t like them out there either.

What is sexist about calling someone “sweet cakes” or “sweet baby”? I’ve known gay guys to call each other those names and no one accused them of being sexist.

I used to be an associate producer at ESPN until I moved from Connecticut to Maryland a couple of years ago. Jeannine Edwards was never very will liked. But they had to keep her on because the network had to maintain a certain percentage of female reporters. I’m glad someone finally called her out. I know there’s a lot of people there who wish she would leave.
