El Debarge cancels tour, checks into rehab
El Debarge, 49, has voluntarily checked into rehab in the middle of his comeback tour.
The singer, who released Second Chance last November, released the following statement regarding his decision to check into rehab:
“I hate to disappoint my fans but it is necessary for me to take the time to work on me so that I may continue to share my music and my story with everyone.”
Debarge has canceled all scheduled performances with Kem and Ledisi and Musiq Soulchild will take his place.
El Debarge has long battled drug and alcohol problems and has a long rap sheet. He’s admitted to being a drug addict for 25-years and has been arrested numerous times for cocaine, crack, and domestic abuse.
El Debarge was nominated for two Grammys, Best Male R&B Vocal Performance and Best R&B Song, but won neither.
Checking into rehab the day after the Grammy Awards? Maybe El Debarge had a little bit too much fun that night…?

For the record; El did not attend the Grammy’s…facts are crucial. Let this man heal without hurtful, insensitive comments. Unless you have walked in his shoes, you have no idea what El is going through. His fans love him unconditionally and want only the best for El….be kind, please.

We are well aware of the abuse he and his entire family lived with for a very long time..his father was not the Father he could and should have been .Yes he needs to heal ,the last thing he needs is ignorant ,hurtful comments…Michael Jackson was hurt enough for EVERYONE..! I hope to see Handsome and multi talented El,back ,feeling good about himself ,and finally gettING HIS ‘Second Chance’ ,We are here for You El,,,let Love for yourself ,and your children guide you back …we Love You and respect you El! My heart really hurts for El; however, I know he will recover because he has “God’s Favor and Unmerited Grace” over his life and the Enemy of drugs can’t destroy his life. El was called from his mother’s womb to write, produce and sing great music. He has a God given talent and the Lord will complete that talent in him before he leaves this earth!
I have and always will love El Debarge because he’s very special. I don’t know him personally, but I do know that he’s a very sweet and given man that is loved by many! We all have made mistakes in our twenties and regret them. The differnce is that El made the mistake of drugs and having difficulty of recovering; however, I know the Lord will deliver him and set him free when he really makes his mind up to just trust God! El, just keep your mind on Jesus and believe that he will heal you from drugs! You know he will and can! Just trust him!
I love you and hopefully, I can meet you someday and give you the biggest hug in the world!

Wishing El all the best in his recovery. His true fans and people with any type of kindness and compassion in their hearts will support and pray for him during this difficult time. I have loved Debarge ever since I saw them for the first time on Soul Train and that LOVE has never stop. Everything will be okay El. Please take care of yourself so that you may kick this horrible habit. One thing El has a praying mother who is full of faith Your true fans will alway be here for you no matter what. Don’t worry about the negative media (because some people don’t want to see you do well). At this time PLEASE focus on your children and the relationship you so wish to build with them. They need their father, your family need you and your fans need and want you. I brought the CD “Second Chance” and can I tell I have not STOPPED listening to it. I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!! The devil is a liar!!!!!
