Katherine Jenkins performed on Dancing with the Stars 4/11/2011
It’s Classical Week on Dancing with the Stars and singer soprano Katherine Jenkins performed with David Garrett on Monday night’s show.
Katherine Jenkins is a 30-year old Welsh mezzo-soprano, who has a long history of scholarships, awards and musical honors. She’s worked as a model, a teacher and a tour guide. She also plays piano. This girl does everything, and she does it all well.
Monday night Katherine Jenkins performed on Dancing with the Stars with a live orchestra and David Garrett on violin.
Once the video for Katherine Jenkins on Dancing with the Stars is available I will post it here, but the video above shows her amazing talent as a soprano. Check out her performance from Strictly Come Dancing from 2008 until then!
Never watched Dancing with the Stars and can’t stand American Idol either. Channel hopping and stopped while Katherine Jenkins was singing. WOW!! How come my wife and I have never heard of her before now??
Did a search and well known in the UK. Songs/Albums are available on this side of the pond.
Glad she was able to get some exposure on Dancing with the Stars as my wife and I will be purchasing some of her CDs to download on our cars’ sound memory storage systems. What a talent she has!!
Katherine Jenkins is talented in pop music, but when it comes to opera arias there are so many singers who can perform these pieces better. For O mio babbino caro – check out Ruth Ann Swenson, Angela Gheorghiu, Renee Fleming even some young singers like Nadine Sierra. For other pices, check out Elina Garanca, Jennifer Larmore, Rinat Shaham, Anna Caterina Antonacci or Denyce Graves.
Of course “better” depends on what you like. Katherine Jenkins performs in a genre called “classical crossover” (operatic pop, popera) which is a mixture of pop and classical. If you like this genre or pop music and are unfamiliar or don’t like opera, you may prefer Jenkins. But by opera standards her singing is inadequate – her voice is breathy, it wobbles (her vibrato is too big), her diction is bad, and she fails to express what she is singing.
So if you are not familiar with classical music and haven’t heard these pieces before do check out other performances of these arias especially those done on operatic stage. Once you listened to a few of them, go back and listen to Jenkins. See what you think then.
