‘Heart of Glass,’ released as a single on January 3, 1979, topped the charts and became an instant classic.
The song was originally named, ‘Once I Had Love,’ and was written by Deborah Harry around 1974-1975 and was recorded as a demo soon after. The original was much slower than the upbeat, disco-pop hit that it became.
Although the song was a huge mainstream hit, the band Blondie took a lot of flack from the New Wave bands they had been performing with in New York. They thought Blondie had sold out by putting out a disco tune. To this day the band jokes about it being “The Disco Song.”
Heart of Glass was banned from radio play in Australia due to the lyric, “pain in the ass.” My how times have changed.
