Surfing champion Andy Irons: questions surrounding his death answered
After the death of surfing champion Andy Irons, many fans and Irons’ own family became involved in a heated debate whether drugs were involved in his death.
Andy Irons allegedly caught Dengue Fever while in Puerto Rico for the Rip Curl Pro Search and had to withdraw. On his way home from Puerto Rico, he became so sick in Dallas that he could not continue on to travel home to Kauai. He died at the Grand Hyatt hotel in Dallas.
Now, seven months later, the official autopsy report has been released and the results are mixed. According to the report: “The primary and underlying cause of death is ischemic heart disease due to coronary artery pathology.” This is what Irons’ family has maintained all along. That he had a heart condition. However, drugs were also a factor leading up to his death. The report continues: “Drugs, particularly, methadone and cocaine, are other significant conditions contributing to death but not resulting in the underlying cause.”
Regardless, a sad ending to Andy Irons’ life. He left behind a wife and an unborn child.
