Matt Damon is a hero to teachers everywhere today, and also actors to an extent, as he defended both professions from the ridiculous criticism that the only thing that makes them better at the jobs and pushes them to improve their craft is the fear of not having a job in the future.
At a Save Our Schools rally in Washington, D.C., Damon, in attendance to support the cause of his mom (a teacher) agreed to an interview with Libertarian video site Reason.tv. The dumb blonde (that’s just an observation and not a commentary on blondes everywhere – she could have been a dumb brunette or dumb redhead for all I care) began to ask questions clearly skewed by all the Kool-Aid she had to drink earlier in the day. Doesn’t Matt Damon work harder as an actor to make sure he’ll land a nice paycheck for GOOD WILL HUNTING 2: HUNTING SEASON? If so, why shouldn’t that same standard apply to teachers?
“So you think job insecurity is what makes me work hard? I want to be an actor. That’s not an incentive. That’s the thing: See, you take this MBA-style thinking, right? It’s the problem with ed policy right now, this intrinsically paternalistic view of problems that are much more complex than that. It’s like saying a teacher is going to get lazy when they have tenure. A teacher wants to teach. I mean, why else would you take a shitty salary and really long hours and do that job unless you really love to do it?”
The camera person then asked Damon, “Aren’t ten percent that are bad though? Ten percent of teachers are bad.”
Damon’s mom looked baffled. “Where’d you get that number?” she asked.
Damon struck back: “Maybe you’re a shitty camera man.”
Damon clearly got agitated by the interviewer’s lack of knowledge and then her cameraman’s willingness to just make up facts, pulling random unfounded statistics from his ass, that he went to bat for teachers everywhere, all while letting the Reason.tv team know in the nice Matt Damon way possible that they’re a bunch of dumbasses.
