On the heels of Warner Bros. releasing their first image of Henry Cavill as Superman, the studio has brought attention once again to its other big superhero franchise – Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy. Early this morning, the first official image of Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle popped up online at TheDarkKnightRises.com, showing off the more reality-based vision for the character whose alter-ego is Catwoman.
Unlike Michelle Pfeiffer and Halle Berry before her, this version is much less latex, a lot less pleather, and plenty more functional in the real world Gotham City that’s been created between BATMAN BEGINS and THE DARK KNIGHT RISES. The glasses are most likely night vision capable, fitting into the burglar abilities of Catwoman, and there is no cat-earred head piece that might otherwise look ridiculous in trying to fit into this more grounded Batman reality.
It’s interesting to note that Hathaway is seated upon the Bat-pod, so perhaps her thieving ways now expand to carjacking for THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, and it’s doubly interesting that the image has no reference to Catwoman at all. She is simply referred to as Selina Kyle, making me think we’re going to get a lot more name drops of that particular end of the character in Nolan’s Batman finale than Catwoman, in line with the references to Harvey Dent in THE DARK KNIGHT, where his “Two Face” persona was only worked in when necessary to the story.
