Celebrity Deadbeat Tippers

Dear Tiger Woods, Being a stingy tipper, is no laughing matter 

Stumbling upon a recent list of celebs that are awful tippers has inspired me to write about the topic.

One thing that I’ve learned is never okay, is skimping out on a (decent) tip to a server that has worked their buns off for you, and most likely gets paid in peanuts!  This frustration comes from working in the restaurant service industry (mostly as a server), for more than 10 years of my life.

Anyway, the Miami New Times blog compiled a list of crappy celebrity tippers, called simply enough , the “Top Ten Cheapest Celebrity Tippers”.  Apparently, there are tons of websites out there keeping track of this type of behavior (such as Bitterwaitress.com – ha!), and this list was the final product from research of such sites.

Surprised or not, Tiger Woods (worth an estimated $500 million) made the #1 spot, having once taken back a $5 tip from a waitress, because he realized he had already tipped her earlier in the night.

Following close behind Woods is Material Girl Madonna.  Reportedly, Madge once left an $18 tip on a $400 tab, and has also been known to leave nothing at all.

Also included in the “Top Ten” were LeBron James (tipped $10 on an $800 tab),  Entourage’s Jeremy Piven (bummed about this one), and Mariah Carey (not too shocked here).

Missing from the list oddly, though, is Miss Jennifer Lopez.  In 2003, it was reported the while dating Ben Affleck, Lopez took back a $5000 chip Ben gave some Las Vegas dealers as a tip, and replaced it with three $100 chips.

Luckily there are kind-hearted celebs like Johnny Depp who is known for his good-tipping habits, like leaving a lucky waiter a $4000 tip in 2009.  He must know that tipping well gives you good karma, and everyone can use a little of that!
