Thank goodness for the internet, because having missed Chris Cornell’s performance on Thursday’s “Late Show With David Letterman”, I was able to see the clip thanks to a quick Google search.
Phew!
The Soundgarden singer and grunge icon sang an acoustic song he contributed to a movie’s soundtrack recently. The movie, Machine Gun Preacher, is based on a true story and features Gerard Butler in the role of humanitarian Sam Childers, an ex-criminal that turns to God and travels to Sudan to help refugee children affected by the war. The flick was released September 23 to a number of theaters across the U.S., and the song is now available for download on iTunes. A percentage of sales from “The Keeper” will be donated directly to Sam Childer’s Angels of East Africa charity, according to Chris Cornell’s website.
In a recent interview with Artistdirect.com, Cornell was asked how he compared the softer, acoustic feel of “The Keeper”, to the sound of their upcoming and much anticipated new album.
Cornell replied, “Well, no matter what, Soundgarden is always going to be heavier. However, I also think musically the new Soundgarden stuff is different than anything we’ve ever done.” He adds, “I think every time we’ve made a record it wasn’t really that easy to compare it to the previous one—other than that we’re the same band. I think there may be some moments that are sort of sonically quieter and more stripped-down. On the whole, it’s a rock record. That’s what we do.” ?
Currently Cornell is on a solo acoustic tour, all the while continually working on Soundgarden’s new album, which is set to release in early 2012.
