Garbage Is Back And Better Than Ever

Don’t call it a comeback! Garbage, from left to right is: Butch Vig, Steve Marker, Shirley Manson and Duke Erikson

It’s been six years since we were blessed with an album from alt-rockers Garbage, led by the charismatic firecracker of a singer Shirley Manson, but the wait is about to come to an end, as the band has just announced they are putting out an album sometime next year.

Garbage, which still includes sexy Scottish singer Shirley Manson, drummer Butch Vig (who was well-known for producing Nirvana’s Nevermind album), guitarist Steve Marker, and bassist/keyboardist Duke Erikson, hit the music scene in 1995 and quickly made their mark.

Known mostly for their 90s chart-topping hits like “Stupid Girl”, “Only Happy When It Rains”, and my personal faves “Vow”, “Special” and “#1 Crush”, Garbage kept the band growing strong through 2005 (with four studio albums under their belt), at which point they decided to take an “indefinite hiatus”, so some members could work on solo projects.  Ending their hiatus in 2007, the band released a greatest hits record “Absolute Garbage” and in 2010, started work on what will be their 5th official album, coming out in 2012.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the band made an obscure press release announcing the musical ‘comeback’ saying, “Years-worth of pent-up music came out in some bizarre ways. Bleary cell phone memos became real songs, conversations turned into lyrics, and new computer gizmos inspired wicked tangents. Ghosts came in, had their say. Everyone brought ideas, and everyone fought their corner.  At the end of the day it all gets shoved through the four-way brain filter that is Garbage and it ends up sounding like nobody else. Red feathers and black tar.”  Makes sense to me! Ha!

Although not much info has been released about the new album, I am uber-excited, as I have a soft spot for the band.  I grew up listening to them on my cassette player on my walks to and from high school.  Ahh the good ol’ days!

Just for fun and to bring back memories, here’s a flashback to their song “Special”.  Enjoy!
