Could you imagine Lady Gaga being a part of a band, apart from just being a solo act? For me, it’s hard to imagine, but not for Queen guitarist Brian May!
The singer/songwriter and astrophysicist, who has been with the iconic rock band since 1971, seemed to offer some verbal clues that he and the rest of the band members were thinking of having Miss Gaga front the group. Say whaaaat?
Billboard reports that May, 64, spoke with The Daily Express recently about the ‘Gaga consideration’ as well as their “singer problem” (referring to the untimely death of original frontman Freddie Mercury in 1991, and their subsequent search for a lead singer since the tragedy). May says that he and the rest of Queen (which also consists of bassist John Deacon and drummer Roger Taylor) have been approached many times before regarding possible music collaborations. No doubt they have!
Recently May and Lady Gaga (in character as Jo Calderone), were seen jammin’ together at the MTV VMAs this past August, when the two performed Gaga’s “You and I”. Referring to that gig, May says, “I worked with Lady Gaga and she’s very creative and is someone we’ve talked about singing, fronting the band with. She’s not just a singer, she writes her own material.”
So, does that mean the band really is serious about having Gaga be their permanent lead singer? Not so fast…
May clarifies his comment, mentioning that Queen has considered a number of singers in the past to work with for a variety of different projects. He adds, “We have talked about doing duets with other people and in a strange way I almost pressed the yes button. We were debating the idea of a TV show where we have all these guest stars. We didn’t press it today but we are still looking at it. Lady Gaga has said she would like to do something with us.”
Well who wouldn’t want to work with Queen??
The idea, as intriguing as it is to me, looks good on paper, but I don’t think it could work beyond some sort of one-time special edition collaboration. Do you think Gaga would be a good fit for Queen?
Check out Gaga performing with May at the VMAs this year below! (Note: the video is a bit grainy, but is fun nevertheless, fun to watch. Brian May comes in at about 5:45)
They sounded pretty good together in this track….
