Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth, at the Rodarte Fall 2010 Fashion Show
There aren’t many famous couples that, upon hearing news that they have broken up, I’m either surprised or particularly affected by, but with the news of Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore, I’m both.
If you didn’t know already, Gordon, 58, and Moore, 53, have been a part of the 90s iconic alt/indie-rock band Sonic Youth since 1981, with Gordon singing and playing bass, and Moore singing and playing guitar. The duo have also been married for 27 years and have a 17-year-old daughter named Coco Haley, but unfortunately, the rockstar couple might be heading for divorce.
SPIN.com reports that a rep for Gordon and Moore released a statement that confirms the breakup, along with casting some doubt on whether their band will make it beyond the relationship’s demise.
The statement reads, “Musicians Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore, married in 1984, are announcing they have separated. Sonic Youth, with both Kim and Thurston involved, will proceed with its South American tour dates in November. Plans beyond that tour are uncertain. The couple has requested respect for their personal privacy and does not wish to issue further comment.”
Oh, this just bites…
Thurston Moore, in a 2008 interview, spoke about his long-standing marriage with the magazine, saying, “There’s no secret. We’ve never sold each other out on anything. I can easily follow the allure of wanting to go out and be with the boys, and play industrial noise and smoke pot and drink, but nothing replaces the reality of our relationship. I can’t trade that for anything. I can’t think of how or where I’d be without Kim’s influence. And we’re like any couple that’s been together for close to 30 years. There’s a genuine psychophysical connection. Sometimes I feel things happening in me, and I know that something’s going on with her. When you’re married and you have that kind of connection, you become really spiritually, psychologically connected. We grew up together, in a way.”
The band, which released their 16th studio album The Eternal in 2009, currently has five remaining dates on their tour, all of which will be held in South America in November.
What a bummer! Hopefully, if the pair can’t patch things up personally, they can both carry on in the band, but how awkward would that be? I mean, if Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham can do it, then?? Yeah, they weren’t exactly married, and weren’t even together as long, but…tell me there’s a chance!!!
