Dave Grohl knows that the word ‘TEAM’ = “Together Everybody Achieves More”
After seeing the incredible Foo Fighter’s Wednesday night at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, CA, I have been left in a sort of rock haze the last couple days…I’m all about the Foos, but what’s new? Heh.
Amazing that in 15 years of being a fan, I have only seen them a handful of times, but each time I have seen them live, they have NEVER disappointed, and I’m sure they never will.
Anyway, today I came across a fun little story that made me like Dave Grohl even more than I did before, which I thought might be impossible. According to SPIN.com, the Foo Fighters’ frontman offered to fill in for Cage The Elephant’s drummer, Jared Champion, after his appendix burst earlier this month. Cage The Elephant (who are awesome live btw), have been opening for the Foos on their current tour for Wasting Light, and had the unexpected emergency occur at a show in Salt Lake City, Utah, at the Maverick Center.
Lincoln Parish, who is the band’s guitarist, told SPIN, “He had an ulcer for a couple days, then at 1 A.M. it was just unbearable, so he went to the emergency room,” adding, “He was rushed straight into surgery.”
Apparently, once Grohl heard about what was going on, he called their tour manager and asked if the Cage boys would “go for it” (meaning, letting him fill in as their temporary drummer). The answer was a loud “YES!”
So, Grohl teamed up with another ‘fill-in’ drummer (the tour’s monitor engineer) to help out the band, with Grohl playing the songs he felt the most familiar with. Of Grohl’s quick stint in the band Parish says, “I had to pinch myself. I turned around and Dave Grohl is playing the drums. It’s an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime experience. Nobody can replace Jared. But…it’s Dave f**king Grohl. If you’re going to be replaced by anybody, it might as well be the best.”
Mr. Grohl also helped the band with their set a few days later at the Forum in Los Angeles. Parish talks about his band’s gratefulness of the help saying, “It’s a move indicative of the two bands’ friendship. I’ve never met a group of more humble musicians,” adding, “We sat down and had dinner with Dave last night. He’s like a friend you’ve had for 20 years. It’s like you’re talking to your old buddy from high school. The first night of the tour, as soon as we got offstage, Dave had shots of whiskey. Last night he came into the dressing room with moonshine.”
Good thing Grohl knows that there’s no ‘I’ in ‘TEAM”. Ha!
Luckily, Champion got released from the hospital with a clean bill of health a few days after he was admitted and is doing well now. Good to hear!
