Reese Witherspoon Is Currently PETA’s Enemy Number One

Reese Witherspoon out shopping with her python purse

Reese Witherspoon has struck a nerve with animal rights group PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) for her recent choice in purses.

The actress, who was snapped sporting a designer bag made from the skin of a python, was blasted Monday by PETA. In their statement they wrote, “No matter how much Reese paid for that bag, the animals paid a much higher price.”

E! Online reports that the purse was a Chloe Paraty original, that holds an almost $4,000 price tag.

Never a group to hold back, PETA continued, “Every year, millions of snakes are impaled on hooks or nailed to trees by their heads and skinned alive. Hoses are inserted into the mouths of large snakes—like pythons—and their bodies are pumped full of water to loosen their skin so that it will cut away more easily. The animals’ peeled, writhing bodies are then discarded, and it often takes days for the animals to die from the effects of shock and dehydration. We can’t imagine that she’d wish to contribute to this hidden suffering, especially for something as frivolous as a fashion accessory that can be replicated with no bloodshed.”

Closing the statement, PETA added, “These days, it’s easy to have a look that kills without killing—with fake snake, mock croc, python pleather, and other designer items that pay tribute to the beauty of these animals without massacring them.”

Jane Dollinger, a PETA spokesperson, told E! News that they are going to send Witherspoon a video, which is narrated by Joaquin Phoenix (her costar in Walk The Line), talking about the cruelty that goes on within the exotic skins industry.

Although I agree with PETA’s suggestion of using fake or mock skins instead of the real deal, sometimes their messages are brought on in such an aggressive way. I mean, dealing with the subject matter at hand, I guess it would be hard to candy-coat it, but still, their tactics can get pretty controversial.

Recently there was a story about PETA’s plans to launch a website that would ‘trick’ people thinking they are visiting a pornographic site. Once they are flooded with racy pictures, the content is then switched to graphic, horrifying images of animals being slaughtered and tortured. Not sure about you, but to me that’s just wrong on so many levels. I don’t think it’s necessary to demean humans in order to educate people about animal rights.

What do you all think about this??
