Amy Winehouse and Nas = Two peas in a pod
Not only did Winehouse sing about Nas on “Me and Mr. Jones” in her Back to Black album that made her famous, but the two collaborated in a few musical efforts that never saw the light of day, according to producer Salaam Remi, who spoke to MTV News last month in New York’s Jungle Studios.
According to the famous producer, the recently released “Like Smoke” is the first time the public has heard the duo perform together. The song will appear on Winehouse’s posthumous album called Lioness: Hidden Treasures, and will be released December 6th. In the song, Nas sings never-heard-before verses sung in between the bluesy songstress’ vocal tracks. Although Winehouse wasn’t here to see the final product of their two voices joined, Remi is sure she would approve based on his interactions with the two of the in the past.
Remi says of the two artists, “Amy sang on records that we never put out with Nas. As far as them now getting on the same record, that was a conversation in play for the last couple of years but that just didn’t happen yet, and when I listened to that song, I was like, you know what? This makes sense, to actually make that happen as far as things that she wants to do that didn’t happen yet.”
Speaking about Nas’ mind frame during the writing process (of his portion) of the song, Remi says, “He just put it in perspective for me.”
Remi continues, “As far as myself, I feel like I’m repping her musically because that’s what I know of her more than anyone else. And then as far as where [Nas is] at, he put that energy back into [the song], because she repped for him. I mean, who writes songs for people, unless you really respect them?” Good point!
