20th Century Fox unveiled our first look at the newest version of THE THREE STOOGES, the long-in-development film made by the Farrelly brothers (DUMB & DUMBER, THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY). Choosing not to go the biopic route, the Farrellys are instead making a film in the mold of the Stooges – three short films with new versions of Moe, Larry and Curly – which bring their slapstick comedy into the present day.
At one point, the film was being built around Benicio Del Toro, Sean Penn and Jim Carrey, but with the gestation of the film taking quite some time, all three stars eventually dropped out, later to be replaced by the current trio of Sean Hayes, Will Sasso and Chris Diamantopoulos. For a movie that sounds like a terrible idea on paper, the trailer doesn’t make it look all that bad… in fact, much better than I expected. It manages to get a lot closer to capturing the tone of the Stooges than I ever could have imagined, and, to their credit, while they aren’t the originals, Hayes, Sasso and Diamantopoulos do a credible and accurate job of impersonating the Stooges and giving them new life.
THE THREE STOOGES hits theatres on April 13, 2012.
