James Cameron
James Cameron is getting sued once again for allegedly ripping off the idea for a movie you might have heard of before…Avatar.
It’s been reported that a science fiction writer named Bryant Moore is asking for more than $2 billion in a lawsuit against the Avatar director, claiming that Cameron used two of his screenplays (“Aquatica” and “Descendants: The Pollination”) in coming up with Avatar’s conception.
In the court documents, Moore describes similarities between his and Cameron’s work, including “bioluminescent flora/plant life, unbreathable atmospheres, matriarch support of hero vs. heroine, spiritual connections to environment and reincarnation, appearance of mist in scene, sunlight to moonlight, crackling from gargantuan foliage, blue skin/green skin and battle scene on limbs/branches” (via TMZ).
Apparently Cameron isn’t Moore’s sole target, as he is also going after Cameron’s production company and 20th Century Fox.
According to Wikipedia, 2009’s Avatar made $2,782,275,172 at the box office. Depending on who you ask, the movie’s budget was somewhere between $230 million to $500 million, although I have seen more guesstimating it closer to $280 million. Definitely not chump change, that’s for sure. As for Cameron, in 2010, Forbes magazine estimated his net worth at around $650 million.
So, will this lawsuit go anywhere? Probably not, but we’ll see!
