Nicki Minaj Doesn’t Try To Be Sexy

Nicki Minaj is over trying to be sexy because she says it’s “boring”.

The 29-year-old singer was interviewed recently by the Daily Telegraph, where she spoke about the pressure she once felt to ‘sex up’ her image in order to become successful in the hip-hop world.

“When I started getting serious about rap, the people closest to me were like, ‘You should dress this way, you should speak that way, you should rap this way.’ I just started feeling super caged in,” she says, adding, “I thought you had to do that [be sexy]. But it’s boring. The typical sexy. I mean, girls wanna be sexy but I also think you have other sides of yourself.”

She goes on to say that she felt she was covering up her true personality. “Right before my album came out I felt like I had been hiding my personality – my comedic side. I had to ask myself, ‘Why am I only showing one facet of who I am?’”

Minaj has been a busy bee lately. After performing at the Super Bowl with Madonna and M.I.A. during the halftime show last Sunday, and at the 2012 Grammy’s yesterday, the “Roman Holiday” songstress has been keeping busy finalizing her next album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, which will be released on April 3. She’s also slaying it with Twitter. She just passed up Eminem as the most followed hip-hop artist, with over 9 million followers.

I wasn’t a huge fan right away, but the more I read about her, the more I like her. Artistically, she seems to do what she wants, regardless of popular opinion. That’s always admirable.

Update: After seeing her Grammy performance, I’m remaining in the ‘not a huge fan’ category. Yes, she does what she wants, but that was uber-creepy! Hellllo Illuminati!! Plus, it reminds me of Gaga’s performance HERE, especially the end of it.
