No Doubt’s Debut Turns 20 Today

No Doubt’s self-titled debut album dropped 20 years ago today.

The band recorded the album independently and by 1990, they were signed by Interscope, who demanded they rerecord the album. Having zero radio singles and only selling 30,000 copies, it was considered a commercial failure.

The band ended up paying for their tour out of their own pockets, and also financed the making of their “Trapped in a Box” video, which you can see below. Good on them, because, obviously it paid off for them in the end!
