Mary J. Blige says the Burger King commercial we see, is not what she intended to make
Although Blige admits to shooting the ad for the burger chain, she’s claiming she never signed off on the version that has gone viral recently.
If you remember, Blige is shown singing in the middle of Burger King restaurant, with that lovely voice of hers, all about fried chicken wraps (?). What’s ticked people off is not so much the fact that we want to know why the hell she would resort to this type of selling out (although it does bug), but some people are saying the commercial is perpetuating stereotypes, in this case the stereotype about African-Americans liking fried chicken.
Once the ad began airing, it immediately drew criticism and has since been yanked from its YouTube site.
Regarding the mess, Blige says in a statement, “I agreed to be a part of a fun and creative campaign that was supposed to feature a dream sequence. Unfortunately, that’s not what was happening in that clip.”
She adds, “I understand my fans being upset by what they saw. But, if you’re a Mary fan, you have to know I would never allow an unfinished spot like the one you saw go out.”
Damage control alert!
I like Blige and all, but not sure I’m buying this. It’s hard to believe a gigantic company like Burger King, who’s working on a campaign like this with such a huge celebrity would not having their legal B.S. in order, you know? If they didn’t, I imagine they’ll be looking at an ugly lawsuit from Ms. Blige very soon.
