The Rock of Ages’ actors are going to be a big part of the soundtrack
Whose idea was it to take classic bands with legendary songs, and have a movie’s cast of stars turn around and perform them for the soundtrack?
That’s exactly what the honchos behind Rock of Ages decided to do, and you can see the movie when it’s released on June 1.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the 20-song record accompanying the film will include music by bands like Guns N’ Roses, Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, Joan Jett, and Pat Benetar, just to name a few.
The cast bold enough to sing the songs includes Tom Cruise, Julianne Hough, Diego Boneta, Mary J. Blige, Russell Brand, and Catherine Zeta-Jones, among others.
The film is an adaptation of the 2006 Broadway musical of the same name, which is based on a love story about a waitress (Hough) who falls in love with a busboy (Boneta) during the rock music-infused era of the 1980s.
Director of the movie, Adam Shankman, says of the decision, “Taking classic, beloved rock anthems and seeing them through the unique perspective of the characters in the film was such an exciting prospect for me in directing Rock of Ages.”
He adds, “We had a phenomenal cast who performed these songs in such a powerful way — adding depth and meaningful imagery to the film. I was lucky to have a partner in Adam Anders who, better than anyone working today, understands how to take popular songs and seamlessly repurpose them to tell a story with unparalleled originality and success.”
With an $80M dollar budget, an all-star cast, and Adam Anders (Glee) serving as the executive music producer, I think the final result will sound just fine.
The soundtrack will be released June 5.
