Erykah Badu Tells Flaming Lips Singer: ‘Kiss My Glittery Ass’

What might have once been a friendship, business-wise if nothing else, is no more between “Neo-Soul” singer Erykah Badu and Flaming Lips singer Wayne Coyne.

The two artists recently collaborated with Badu making a guest appearance on The Lips’ album The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends Record Store Day, where Badu and Coyne cover their own version of Roberta Flack’s “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face”. With that came a very NSFW video for the song starring Badu and her sister Nayrok.

In the clip, Badu is seen fully naked in a bathtub, singing the lyrics to the song, while being interrupted by shots of her sister getting drenched in various substances (liquid corn starch, glitter, and some sort of milky goo). The video went viral June 1^st, but has since been yanked from the internet world, at least for now. ***UPDATE: Here it is, found it, but WARNING, it is VERY NSFW! Viewer discretion is advised!***

Anyway, apparently Ms. Badu hadn’t yet approved the video before it was released and obviously this ticked her off. Rolling Stone points out that in May, Badu (Twitter name: @fatbellybella) tweeted that the video looked “cosmic”, but quickly that nice turned to nasty. Badu has since tweeted that Coyne is “self serving” and has said, “”I never would have approved that tasteless, meaningless, shock motivated video.”

She really gives it to him, telling him what a piece of trash he is for misleading her into doing something which she thought at first would have taste, but ended up being a “poor excuse for art.” You can read the full letter on her Facebook page, as it’s too long to post here.

Since Badu’s post, the Flaming Lips have attempted to apologize (half-ass maybe?) by releasing a statement that basically said they didn’t mean to offend anyone, and they take full responsibility for the unapproved version of the video, but that didn’t cut it for Ms. Badu who shot back with, “You can KiSS MY Glittery ASS.” Funny thing is, in his sarcastic way, Coyne did with this picture. Ha!
