Joseph Gordon-Levitt is one of those actors that seems to be loved by everyone. Both men and woman seem to like him, but recently he struck a nerve with some fans when he commented that attractive women weren’t funny.
During the Looper Comic-Con panel, JGL said, “Most pretty girls aren’t funny” in an attempt to compliment his co-star Emily Blunt on “her ability to make him laugh.”
Gawker points out that Variety’s transcript of the comment actually went like this: “Pretty girls aren’t usually funny.” I think that makes a little bit of a difference, but either way, many women were offended.
The 31-year-old actor spoke with Yahoo’s OMG! recently about his controversial comment. “I’m actually glad you asked me about that, because I was embarrassed,” he said. “Sometimes the words come out really wrong, and sometimes the words come out really wrong in front of thousands of people. I do apologize.”
He goes on say that what he was trying to say was that “in our culture, girls do tend to get pigeonholed…and I was trying and failing to pay [Blunt] a compliment about the fact that she really succeeded in avoiding those traps and not getting pigeonholed, and even though she’s a very good looking young women she is so funny and plays such a badass and a strong woman in Looper.”
Not sure if he’s really saying anything different, but the original comment didn’t offend me too much in the first place. People stereotype all the time, and even though I don’t necessarily agree with most stereotypes, I think people need to relax and allow others to sometimes ‘color’ outside the politically correct lines sometimes, and just chill.
