Evanescence singer Amy Lee is said to have been targeted by an online hacking group called Anonymous. The group is accusing Lee of preventing a witness from reporting online child pornography offenses among other things.
The hacking group recently launched a campaign called “Operation PedoChat”, which, according to NME, looks to unveil illegal online activity. The group has apparently added Lee as well as her manager Andrew Lurie, to their target list. Also included in the charge is the Evanescence fan forum EvThreads.
In a petition to parliament, Liberal Democrat MP John Hemming alleged that Lee’s attorneys forced a user on EvThreads (Sam Smith) to sign an agreement that he would not report several offences that appeared on the website, including “drug offences that have been expressly admitted by the alleged perpetrators” as well as the posting of a number of illegal and lewd sexual images that include “sexual offences against a physically disabled male minor and cartoons with pre-teens in lawful poses but with sexualized captions, including sexual activity with animals and one caption regarding a toddler consuming human feces.”
The group has said that they’ll be picketing the band’s November arena tour in the UK in “masked gear” but said they will remain peaceful.
Evanescence’s management team has decided to shut down their fan forum in the mean time.
First off, this world is going to hell in a hand basket. Second, I think it’s great that there are protection groups out there like this protecting the innocent. Third, maybe I’m missing something but why was Lee’s name dragged into this exactly? It makes sense that it’s because this is her band’s website, but is there proof she knew anything about it? It sounds like this is more about her lawyers. Either way, what a messy and unfortunate set of events. I hope they get this figured out and hopefully the band and its members’ names are cleared.
