The “Gangnam Style” dance phenomenon seems to have taken over the world in such a short amount of time, but rapper Psy has revealed the popular jig took at least thirty days to perfect.
The Korean pop (or K-Pop) rapper took the podium at Oxford University Wednesday to talk about his career and overall success. His song “Gangnam Style” and its accompanying dance are such a freaking hit that the YouTube video for it has now hit 674 million views since July. Less than a month ago it was at 478 million. Celebrities love it too…we’ve seen Brit Brit and Ellen get down with it, as well as actor Hugh Jackman.
Anyway, according to Psy, he came up with the horse-style galloping dance after he landed a spot dancing on a Korean television show.
“I was so desperate to get noticed I went to a TV production company in Korea and started doing a dance – a crazy dance – up and down the corridors.” Luckily for him it caught the right people’s attention and he got the job.
“I stayed up for 30 nights to find that horse-riding dance,” he said. “I tried every creature: elephant, monkey, kangaroo, snake. The kangaroo hopping was too slow, so we ended up imitating a horse,” he says.
The entertainer, born Park Jae-sang, told the Oxford Union members that, before pursuing a career in pop music, he trained at the Berklee College of Music in Boston.
The event was such a hit with the historic union’s audience even before it started, and tickets were so sought after that they had to be assigned by a ballot, which hasn’t happened in the society’s 189-year history even with speakers such as Mother Teresa, the Dalai Lama, and Michael Jackson!
The real treat came at the end of the event though, as some of the lucky students (dressed in white tie attire) got to hit the stage and dance the dance with their speaker.
You can see the fun in the clip below, beginning around the 2:05 mark (after the weeping girl walks away).
